NZ investigates China clothes imports

WELLINGTON, New Zealand - New Zealand‘s government is investigating clothing imports from China after some were found to contain dangerously high levels of the chemical formaldehyde, officials said Monday.

Formaldehyde — a preservative that is used to give a permanent press effect to clothes and also as an embalming fluid — can cause problems ranging from skin rashes to cancer.

"Target" producer Simon Roy said scientists from government agency AgriQuality had tested a variety of new children‘s and adult‘s clothes.

Ministry of Consumer Affairs general manager Liz MacPherson said it had launched an investigation into the nature and size of the problem. "We‘re taking some urgent action to investigate it ... We‘re taking it very seriously," she told National Radio.

"We are not releasing further details" of brand names or importers ahead of the show airing on Tuesday, she told The Associated Press.

People who answered phones at the China National Garment Association and the China Textile Industry Association also said they had not heard of the case.

Corporate affairs manager Cynthia Church said all children‘s nightwear sold in New Zealand must comply with rigorous safety standards.

The Chinese are real “artists” when it comes to producing dangerous toxic filth.

I googled Google News on this item, and read a bunch of articles. Formaldehyde is really, really nasty stuff.

“Flaming pyjamas, poisoned trousers from China”
By MATT CALMAN - The Dominion Post | Monday, 20 August 2007

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “First it was toys, now Chinese-made children’s clothing is under the microscope after two young boys were injured when their flannelette pyjamas - labelled low fire danger - caught fire.

It follows revelations to be aired on TV3’s Target programme this week that children’s clothing made in China and sold here contained the chemical formaldehyde at levels 500 times higher than is safe.

Both pyjama incidents happened in July and involved the same type of TWL-brand flannelette pyjamas bought from The Warehouse, which has pulled the product from its shelves.”

“Urgent review into formaldehyde in clothing”
Posted at 12:23pm on 20 Aug 2007

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “TV3 reported that AgriQuality scientists testing clothes imported from China for its Target programme found formaldehyde from 230 parts per million up to 18,000 parts per million. The World Health Organisation says just 20 parts per million can cause skin rashes, respiratory problems and cancer.”

The hits just keep on coming for China...

I can’t believe this isn’t going to all add up to major crises for China. One of those events that communist are unable to handle because their instinct is to cover up and it just won’t work. All these small hits just might turn into a world altering event. A bit like Chernobyl.

Immovable object meets unstoppable force...

At least one of the news articles are calling it “massive amounts”...

While adults frequently can tolerate amounts way about what might be thought of as the standard safety limit, children, especially young children, should be protected from it at all times.

And I don’t want to sound like a fanatic, hell, I got bruised up enough and ate a few earthworms in my yute!

What really chaps my hide is we’ve spent BILLIONS of dollars setting up these nice regulatory agencies like OSHA and the FDA to protect consumers and insure a safe marketplace.

And the FDA has nuthin better to do now than try to make Vitamin C unavailable to Americans!

It’s appalling!

My rule of thumb is...If the tag or label says “Made in China”; I put it back on the shelf.

Works for me.

My brother in Thailand says that the Thais are starting to find and block Chinese imports, as well.

He says that Chinese authorities are telling merchants that can no longer ship their stuff to USA or EU that they should send it to other, smaller countries.

Think about it. With all the tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of people that work in all the alphabet agencies in the United States, this problem was discovered and investigated...

in NEW ZEALAND!

a country where sheep outnumber people like 20 to 1

Of course in America, the sheep outnumber the politicians like 100 to 1, so not much difference, I guess.

Don't you love that?

Our ratings are more important than your child's safety. We have proof of children's clothes laced with toxic chemicals but we would rather have parents wait until a program airs to reveal the brand names found to be dangerous.

In what way is this different than the Chinese who know of the danger but aren't revealing it?

If you have discovered a public danger but are delaying the reveal for your own gain, you are as guilty as the manufacturer of the dangerous goods.

The hits just keep on coming for China...

I have a feeling that this has been going on for some time, it was only when Fluffy and Fido started dropping dead did we pay attention, and start connecting the dots. Mere injuries to a few human beings here and there were just being ignored by the MSM, and the fact that they were obviously getting away with it inspired more Chinese plant owners to get bolder and bolder with it.

Now the piper gets paid.

As djf pointed out, we spends billions for the federal government to inspect and test the safety of these items and they looked the other way.

A bigger question is, did the American companies that imported this stuff know about it and ignore it? They had an even bigger responsibility than the federal government to insure that the products that they were importing, many specifically made for them, were safe. One can only guess that the lawyers are starting to circle...

Sorry to disappoint but, even when it says *Made in USA*, items may contain ingredients from elsewhere.
