American backlash gaining strength

Seven weeks after the collapse of legislation in Congress, the outcry against illegal immigration is louder than ever, manifested by proposed clampdowns at the state and local level and an uproar over the arrest of an undocumented immigrant in the execution-style slayings of three New Jersey college students.

Scores of organizations, ranging from mainstream to fringe groups, are marshaling forces in what former House Speaker Newt Gingrich calls "a war here at home" against illegal immigration, which he says is as important as America's conflicts being fought overseas in Iraq and Afghanistan.

While most of the groups register legitimate, widespread concerns about the impact of illegal immigration on jobs, social services and national security, the intense rhetoric is generating fears of an emerging dark side, evident in growing discrimination against Hispanics and a surge of xenophobia unseen since the last big wave of immigration in the early 20th century.

The Alabama-based Southern Poverty Law Center, which monitors hate groups, said the number of "nativist extremist" organizations advocating against illegal immigration has grown from virtually zero just over five years ago to 144, including nine classified as hate groups, such as the Ku Klux Klan and Aryan supremacists.

Some senators who participated in the midsummer debate over President Bush's failed immigration bill said they were barraged with some of the most venomous mail of their congressional careers. Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., who supported the bill legalizing undocumented immigrants, said he has received death threats because of his position.

"It is unbelievable how this has inflamed the American people," McCain said in a speech Thursday at the Aspen Institute in Colorado.

No, Senator, it is not unbelievable at all. What is unbelievable is how the United States Senate and those inside the Beltway have managed to ignore the federal government's responsibilities to control the borders and immigration for over twenty years.

If you and the federal government had been doing your job for the past two decades, we wouldn't have to be talking about the status of eleven (twelve, twenty?) million illegals.

Yes, that's right! I said ILLEGALS.

In other words, 94% of all groups that oppose illegal immigration aren't racist, but are merely patriotic Americans. Thank you for that confirmation!

It is surprising to me that no Candidate for the Presidency has yet made 'Secure-Borders' the central plank of his platform.

With 72% to 85% of Americans rising-up and smashing the failed Shamnesty bill of a few weeks ago, the first Republican Candidate to state-the-obvious will get the win in a landslide.

Maybe Fred Thompson will do it ................. FRegards

You are so correct on so many points.

The illegals are waging their reconquista, and our leaders are aiding and abetting them. It is a real war against our republic, and against our culture.

Perhaps, like many of us, GOP leaders have had so many Hispanic friends, neighbors, and colleagues over the years that maybe they somehow equate the attitudes of the illegals with those of their own compatriots.

With all due respect Sen. McCain...your suprise at the backlash is a
sign you don’t hang at Free Republic.
OR, that if you do hang at Free Republic, you are either just d-mned
bull-headed and/or in need of a CAT Scan.

Oh, and I do most heartily disapprove of any threats against you
other than sending you packing from public office at the next election
cycle or legal recall/impeachment.

Poor McCain. What can explain his idiocy? Being a "country club republican" or the aftereffects of Communist torture. Whatever the source, McCain is borderline traitorous. Treasonous, Mr. McCain. Don't like the label? Make the most of it, then. Advocating the continued support and protection from prosecution of known and admitted criminals is not the position of a patriot.

McCain, you "sir" are a threat to national security by your words, deeds and actions.

Resign or emigrate.

It will come to that and worse.

I fully suspect that our “elite” would turn against us in a heart beat if we threatened their cheap labor. From their on it would be extremely ugly. In that event, it can be expected that U.N. security forces would be allowed in.

I know that it's central to Hunters' campaign, but (treading very lightly) I was thinking of the candidates that the MSM are eager to talk about. As good as Hunter is (and he's damned good), the media doesn't regard him as a serious prospect, so they blather-on about Rudy, McManiac, and Romney.

They, the MSM, are champing-at-the-bit about Fred Thompson - when-the-hell-is-he-gonna-announce?, and that translates into a lotta free press coverage and campaign cash!

If Thompson were to join with Hunter in an announcement-for-President, and state their combined goal of a secure border immediately after the election, they could be unstoppable! The MSM would recoil at such a stated platform, but the clear message would be out there for the whole Country to see. Hunter can't make that happen alone, but Thompson-Hunter can!

Once the voters (that 72% to 85%) see a team that's dedicated to their wishes, the liberal-lies won't work anymore, and new or born-again Conservative Candidates for the House and Senate will arise. The old DC-bullshit factory would be fractured and a majority in both houses would be possible if not probable again.

I worked hard against that Shamnesty bill as I'm sure you also did, buckeye49, and I was amazed and gratified at the response! The Internet passed another milestone with that test, and most of the organization that was invented then is still in place.

But the only Presidential Candidate that can tap into its' force is someone who's already got face and name recognition. Stay well ...................... FRegards
