Snow to leave White House before Bush Press secretary cites money as reason for departure The Associated Press Updated: 1:21 p.m. ET Aug 17, 2007
WASHINGTON - White House press secretary Tony Snow said Friday he'll leave sometime before the end of the Bush presidency because of financial pressures.
He declined to say when he would depart, but that, "I'm going to stay as long as I can."
The 52-year-old Snow, the father of three children, earns $168,000 as an assistant to the president but made considerably more as a conservative pundit and syndicated talk-show host on Fox News Radio. He was named press secretary on April 26, 2006.
The White House has been shaken by the resignations of some of President Bush's closest aides. Political strategist Karl Rove announced Monday that he would leave at the end of the month. Longtime Bush adviser Dan Bartlett left earlier this year and Andrew Card left earlier as Bush's chief of staff.
Bush's term ends on Jan. 20, 2009.
"I will not be able to make it to the end of this administration, just financially," Snow said. "This job has been such a pleasant surprise in how much I like it. I love it."

“Poor guy cant scape by on 168K a year.”
An asinine comment.
Yeah, me, too.
Better be gone by Labor Day then, if the reasons for the timing of the Rove resignation be true.
He he...
It'd be fun to see Tony and Karl teaming up as political commentators, wouldn't it? :0)
Thanks, SE Mom.
Wishing all the best for our friend Tony.
The reason being????
When Rove announced his departure one of the reasons given for the timing was that Andy Card is supposed to have said that anyone who is still on staff after Labor Day is expected to finish out the entire term.
It may not directly be his health, but if I was someone with a young family, and I had had cancer and a recurrence of the cancer, I’d sure want to be making as much money as I could and socking it away to help provide for my family in the event of a “worst case scenario.”
That is a ridiculously low salary for his position. You cannot get into a decent house in my neighborhood on that much. Take my word for it.
Every. Single. Day.
Tell me, comrade, what should he scrape by on?
ANDY CARD??? You mean Josh Bolten. And he was refering to senior political advisors, not the press secretary.
When his cancer was in remission and he thought that he had a long life ahead of him, taking 3 years off from his high income jobs was not too much of a sacrifice. Unfortunately his cancer came back and he may now not be so confident of his probable lifespan. I am sure that he wants to leave his wife and children as secure as possible. He is a good man for whom we (at least we conservatives) should have compassion, not derision.
I have already heard this on the network radio news. The newsreader practically spit out that he was leaving for financial reasons, that $168,000 was not enough. Since very few Americans make that much, I as sure the DBM's goal is to have people look down on Tony. I hate the agenda-driven DBM.
IF you faced the possibility of an early death, would you not want to leave your family financially secure? He should make the money while he can.
Giving the whoppers he told about amnesty I would never term him a straight shooter, man speaks with forked tongue. Lost all respect for him!
Good point.
specially if helen is in the first row
You really think? Up until 2000(?) the President of the United States made little more than $168K annually ($200K, I think). Put into perspective, $168K would be a presidential salary just seven or eight years ago. Not too shabby, if you ask me.
Based on his appearance...I’d be saying that Tony is trying his best to look good as he has to leave. He probably knows that he has six good months of decent health left and likely will go when he has to go. The thing about Tony....he is a mentor and is rapidly training a dozen underlings in his shop...make mini-Tony’s...although it may be ten years before we start to see them walking truly in Tony’s shadow. He makes others around him look better and wiser...his sense of a story and how to tell it...are fairly hard to find in a journalist today. Katie Couric....can’t possibly measure up to the guy and I’m guessing that GW really feels like Babe Ruth at bat because he had Lou Gehrig (Tony) backing him up...thats the kind of team that you want to see in the White House.
