Despite his pro-life campaign pitch, former Gov. Mitt Romney owns stock in two companies involved in embryonic stem cell research, a controversial field of study he previously cited as the reason for his rightward shift on abortion.
Romney holds stock in the biomedical firms Novo Nordisk and Millipore Corp., both of which use human embryos to research cures for chronic diseases, records show. Many conservatives fiercely oppose the research because it destroys the embryos in the process.
I believe (pulling the investments) is a step he should take, said Mildred Jefferson, president of Massachusetts Citizens for Life. I do believe (Romney) is an honorable man, and having declared that he understands the ethical violation in embryonic stem cell research, I feel certain he would not want to have his money go to support it.
In his public actions, Romney has occupied a middle ground on stem cell research. He has supported research using excess embryos created at

This is really, really weak. There is a significant question here of why a blind trust’s portfolio content, of which Romney could not be aware, was made known to the press.
As for being able to do something about it — I am not sure he can. The problem he faces is . . . the story may not be true. He cannot ask to see the contents of the trust in order to verify the story.
If he believed it was true, he can’t dictate the content of the blind trust. All he can do is dissolve it and open another, and not know if THAT trust manager does the same thing.
Those who want to use it for political purposes are truly scraping the bottom of the barrel due to so little ammunition otherwise, I guess. Must of gotten old claiming he was too rich, too smart, too good-looking, too well-organized, too slick, too savvy etc...
yes, and saying that it is in a blind trust doesn’t cut it. He needs to know how his millions are helping to promote the culture of death! Come on now...
...Too liberal...too “flip-floppy”...
So what? It’s a hedge fund. It owns investments in nearly 2,000 companies. Leave it to the leftists to moan about “socially responsible” investments. Mitt’s fund bases their investments on earnings and charts, as it should be.
-oh boy. First Edwards, now Romney.
You know it has to be a distinct possibility that some of our 401Ks do invest in the same company or other companies that conflict with our stated moral views. Might be a good eye-opener to get more proactive and informed as to what's going on if it is important to you since most of us do not have blind trusts.
Leave it to the leftists to moan about socially responsible investments. Mitts fund bases their investments on earnings and charts, as it should be.
________
LOL. So I guess this gets Mr. Edwards off the hook for his investment is a hedge fund that is linked to subprime loans and foreclosures in New Orleans.
Seems that the investments one makes are fodder for the gristmill regardless of where one sits on the political spectrum. Several threads out there questioning Edwards for this. Is it still good for the gander if it’s good for the goose?

I can't say that any of mutual funds have never owned this.
Right, thats why they endorsed Shannon O’Brien in 2002.
Right. That’s why it was Mitt Romney’s main outlet for getting out his liberal message all those years.
The most important thing people should remember is that Mitt Romney still supports the destruction of “unwanted” human embryos.
His “conversion” is a farce.
Another important thing for people to know is that Mitt Romney also supports cloning embryos, disabling them, and then robbing the body parts for experimentation. It is a process called “altered nuclear transfer.” It, like Mitt Romney, is a sham.
Rush pointed out that Edward’s initial investment in these ventures was not done through a BLIND TRUST. So no, it is not the same thing.
“Also, Stem Cell research is legal. They get government funding if they are using current lines.
Is that is what is happening here?”
Abortion is legal too... Romney claims to oppose abortion because of research he did into stem cells... And yet clearly he invests in (aka helps fund) companies that use stem cells in their research.
AND he is on record as stating that blind trusts are not an excuse.
This does knock my confidence in him down a peg.
-excellent point.
BUT, there is just something so blase about them being sooo rich and thinking they can speak for us.
‘This does knock my confidence in him down a peg.’
So you think he’s backing stem cell research with his investments?
You honestly believe thats all those two companies do?
Wow.
PINGALING
Rush pointed out that Edwards initial investment in these ventures was not done through a BLIND TRUST. So no, it is not the same thing.
_______
Can you document that Mitt’s investment in the stem cell companies were done by the blind trust and not Mitt himself? That would seem to have some bearing on your comment. You mean Rush didn’t look into it that far? Shocking.
