Despite his pro-life campaign pitch, former Gov. Mitt Romney owns stock in two companies involved in embryonic stem cell research, a controversial field of study he previously cited as the reason for his rightward shift on abortion.
Romney holds stock in the biomedical firms Novo Nordisk and Millipore Corp., both of which use human embryos to research cures for chronic diseases, records show. Many conservatives fiercely oppose the research because it destroys the embryos in the process.
I believe (pulling the investments) is a step he should take, said Mildred Jefferson, president of Massachusetts Citizens for Life. I do believe (Romney) is an honorable man, and having declared that he understands the ethical violation in embryonic stem cell research, I feel certain he would not want to have his money go to support it.
In his public actions, Romney has occupied a middle ground on stem cell research. He has supported research using excess embryos created at

What, private companies doing stem cell research on their own? But, but the Mainstream Media keeps telling us that Bush outlawed stem cell research. Thousands are dying everyday because of the evil Bush.
Yeah, at least Judas threw his silver back at the Pharisees
Financial experts, without Mitt's knowledge, have invested some of Mitt's money in a firm which engages in legal research and which may also receive some federal funding for the pursuit of this legal research.
There's nothing here.
The Globe hiding information??? Stop it you!
How many of you own mutual funds in your 401K that are invested in companies that do business in areas you are personally opposed to? Shouldn’t you divest yourselves of those funds?
The blind trust argument is moot. If he sincerely is Pro-Life, he would direct that the trust divest itself from companies that violate that moral conviction, especially for a Christian.
"There's nothing here."
Yes, I'm sure the Romney Campaign would like us to just forget it. It won't happen.
None! And I'm not running for President, either!
For what purpose?
Just giving you Mitt Romney’s historical understanding of what blind trusts amount to politically. Do you disagree with him?
I think every elected official should be using blind trusts to avoid conflicts of interest.
This is a pathetic smear attempt. The guy’s worth $250 Million and I’m sure because that it’s spread around all over. There just ain’t no way that he could possibly manage every possible aspect of his investments on his own or know exactly what the companies he invested in actually do.
Nope.
Own a 401K? Your in the same investment funds I suspect.
The Globe hiding information??? Stop it you!
(chuckle)
Just burying it deep, so to give a false impression to those that only read the ‘gotcha’ lines.
Uh, they were Sadducee’s. Jesus was a Pharisee, thus his title, Rabbi.
I have self directed retirement accounts, and I am extremely choosy who I invest in. Ask the people at Schwab what I did when they hired an anti-American Harry Belafonte to speak to their stockholders.
I know quite well what a blind trust is. It doesn’t mean that Mitt Romney can’t do anything about it.
That street runs both ways.
I have self directed retirement accounts, and I am extremely choosy who I invest in. Ask the people at Schwab what I did when they hired an anti-American Harry Belafonte to speak to their stockholders.
Good for you, I did the same with an brokerage firm a few years back that wanted to give the Impeached One a hundred thousand dollars for a speech.
I wonder how many of these “pro-lifers” on FR own shares of the same company, via their mutual funds and 401ks.
I’m going to have to disagree. No where does the Bible mention that Jesus was a Pharisee. A Rabbi, yes. A teacher, but certainly not a member of the council.
