Are you convinced that smoking around children is not harmful to their health?

Do you want me to post pictures and articles of what real child abuse looks like.

What is the cutoff for child abuse that concerns you?

I draw the line when the abuse causes them to become so developmentally disabled that they grow up to log on to a presumably limited government right wing forum to advocate statism.

The signs of parental failure are not very complicated...if your daughter ends up dancing on a pole...you have failed as a parent.

If your son logs onto DU or Daily Kos, you have failed. If they log on to FR and advocate social engineering and don't know that they belong on DU or Daily Kos, they are even bigger failures.

It almost makes you wish that the worst thing your kids would ever do is smoke cigarettes, huh?

Reading comprehension failing you again today, Ray? I specifically questioned the EPA’s numbers and posed my question to you about that. I even specifically stated in the post, that was the only thing the post was addressing for those whith reading comprehension problems.

One reason she might be on a pole is Mom and Dad smoked her college tuition.

So, the only abusive parents we should be concerned about are the ones with liberal children?

Oh my...a smoker with his panties in a twist. What shall I do?

Run to your favorite lawmakers and ban panties for smokers.

In the end there is but one judge. Some like to think they can be the judge while here on earth believing they can enforce what they conceive as the creator’s intent. That’s where all the trouble begins.

I take these words to heart. “Judge not lest you be judged.” These words seem perfectly clear to me. I am not to judge others, and others are not to judge me. Since the Lord made clear this is his duty. Anyone on earth attempting to take his place hasn’t really ever understood him much less spoken to him...much less honors him. Since obviously they think themselves smarter than him.

Of course, there are rules in society where man must pass judgment upon men and women who are murderers, robbers, and rapists. At the same time, I have a wonderful feeling there are millions of honorable soldiers who also happened to smoke and who subsequently died tragically on the battlefield defending our freedoms who are in heaven today.

I couldn’t get your link to load. But the numbers you presented suggest a total lack of probable causation. Perhaps this is partly why none in my family, whether smoker or not have ever gotten lung cancer. That includes none of the children who happened to be exposed to the smoke of the smokers.

If this “scientific theory” based on the alleged correlations of smokers and those who they expose to cancer with their secondhand smoke, were based on my family history, it would have no standing whatsoever. Heck, we don’t even make the one percenters. We sit squarely at zero percent.

This is not to suggest everyone go smoke or smoke in front of their children. My experience is an islolated one within my own family experience. Today I will not smoke anywhere near my grandson. So yea, they got to me. Even though I have been exposed to it all my life without any ill fate, I find myself surrendering to the current cause celeb submitting to their fears bogus or not. Since if later in life my grandson developed asthma, who do you think would get the blame if I smoked in front of him?

I’ve wondered the same things for quite some time. In addition, I fear for this country when we have people celebrating these freedom stealing actions. Now we even have a very large portion of the population begging for the government to take control of their physical bodies, in the form of nationized health care.

Lady Liberty weeps!

I don't know what happened when you tried that link but it just now worked for me. Probably a temporary system error. But you are right there is very little to establish a probable causation. The numbers I would like to get are the lifetime probabilities/percentages of getting lung cancer for smokers and for non-smokers. The article at the link suggests what those numbers are (and are very low) but doesn't directly quote them. So far I have not been able to find those statistics but they ought to be the most basic epidemiological stats of all. Without them I don't think any of the other statistical extrapolations could be made with any validity at all. Yet they remain elusive.

I understand your reluctance to become the scapegoat for any potential respiratory problems your grandchild might develop. That's human nature. Neurotic human nature anyway. It would certainly be easier to blame the occasional waft of evil tobacco smoke than too much dairy, too much wheat or soy or too much junk food with artificial colors, flavors and preservatives. Or just simply that 'stuff happens.'

A previous post on this thread made an interesting observation about that very subject. How is it that smoking is in a significant decline and childhood asthma is on the rise? Not only is the percentage of smokers in the population declining the places where people can smoke has been drastically restricted. Could it be that raising kids in a bubble has made them less resistant to irritants when they encounter them? Nahhhhhhhh.

One reason she might be on a pole is Mom and Dad smoked her college tuition.

Even at today's high prices it would take about 11 years of Mom and Dad each smoking one pack per day to spend one year's average college tuition on tobacco. I think you've just put forth the weakest argument for anything ever made on FR.

“If they can smell it, they are inhaling carcinogens.”

Since you have made it clear that you are in support of the government regulating adult behaviour that causes children to be exposed to toxic substances and carcinogens, at all levels, is it safe to assume that you support this in all situations?

Would you support the government regulation of cleaning supplies used in the home? How about just allowing the police to ticket people for cleaning with toxic chemicals while their children are in the house and can smell the cleaning chemicals?

“So where do you want to draw the line on when the state can interfere or can’t?”

When actual harm can be proven, then the harmed party should be given protection. See how simple that is...

Of course, you advocate total protection from all exposure to any carcinogen, in the name of protecting children. In that case, legislation should be passed to ban popping microwave popcorn in private residences with children present.

Boy, this carcinogen game gets fun.

“I don’t support banning smoking for adults.”

Yes you do. You only stipulate that the ban occurs when children are present. How about when they might be present at some time in the near future, when the eyes of government are not monitoring the situation?

“Phillip Morris seems to agree SHS is bad, especially around children”

Per their settlement agreement in the MSA that costs billions of dollars, which were passed on to their customers.

See the statement from PH in my post (43 or 45?) Are you going to argue with the manufacturer of the product on the danger?

If you can't tell the difference between popcorn/fireplace and a cigarette, you're a moron not worth discussing anything further with. Please go back to sucking your cancer stick and leave reasoning to the adults. Thanks ;)
