LANCASTER COUNTY, Pa. - U.S. Rep. Joe Pitts said Tuesday he refused to support a local developer's request for a $2 million federal earmark for road improvements that would benefit a shopping center proposed in Manheim Township.
"We are way out of control (with congressional earmarks), and it is a corrupting influence," the Chester County Republican said during an interview with the editorial board of the Intelligencer Journal.
High Real Estate Group wants $2 million in federal funds to improve the Route 30/Harrisburg Pike interchange near the Park City Center. The interchange borders a 90-acre farm where High wants to build a shopping center called The Crossings at Conestoga Creek.
High found a supporter in Pennsylvania Sen. Arlen Specter, a senior member of the Senate Appropriations Committee. Specter announced July 13 that the $2 million would be allocated in a Senate bill yet to be approved. snip According to Citizens Against Government Waste, a watchdog group, federal pork barrel legislation reached a record $29 billion in 2006, and earmarks have increased 29 percent since 2003.
The group last year gave Pitts a "taxpayer hero" rating.
"It's a serious problem we need to correct," Pitts said about earmarks. "Believe me, I get dozens and dozens of requests. I've told them all, 'No.' "

I figured that was what happened, ot2. Just thought it would be funny, in my twisted way, to ‘bust’ you for a dupe post.
Not enough coffee yet this AM, or perhaps too much.
Okay Paulbots—time for a math lesson!
$29 billion / 535 congresscritters = $54 million per congresscritter.
Now we have a “conservative” “no spend without authorization” GOP candidate for president who says he’s against wasteful government spending, but whose “earmarks” are EIGHT TIMES THE AVERAGE!
How long until said candidate’s supporters start questioning this obvious hypocrisy?
You dont understand, paul just realy likes shrimp
