Kim Jong-Il courts New York Phil for Pyongyang gig

AFP Aug 14 02:24 PM US/Eastern

The communist state's reclusive leader, Kim Jong-Il, recently invited the New York Philharmonic to play in the capital Pyongyang, a spokesman for the world-renowned orchestra said.

"We received an invitation to perform in Pyongyang through an independent representative on behalf of the ministry of culture of North Korea," the orchestra's director of public relations, Eric Latzky, told AFP.

But he said the orchestra would only make a decision after discussions with the US government, which has labelled Pyongyang part of the so-called "Axis of Evil" over its nuclear weapons program.

In Washington, State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said he saw no reason why the trip should not go ahead.

"I think, you know, it's really up to the Philharmonic whether or not they accept such an invitation," he said.

*snip*

"We have not explored the invitation any further but we will be in China in February 2008," he said.

He did not say if Kim had requested any favorite pieces.

I’d quit the Philharmonic in protest of that.

But surely they'll HAVE to play "Im so Ronery!" It's a crowd favorite!

This sounds like the first part of a story in The Onion that ends with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra being eaten.

It would have made a more interesting story if Kim Jong Il would have courted Punxsutawney Phil instead.

Hey now! Be nice to Punxsutawney Phil, especially after that incident with the North Koreans and the giant rabbits.

Maybe his studio needs an orchestra for the films that he makes with all those actresses he abducted from other countries. Just abduct an orchestra!

Actually, I have friends who know people in that orchestra, so this is not really that funny...

In all half seriousness, I wouldn’t put it past him to take the NY Phil hostage. We can’t exactly carpet bomb the country with our own folks there. With international opinion not as enthusiastic about the US right now as in times past (& future) Kim might figurem “Eh-What the hell?” He could see it to embarass the US at little risk to himself. Granted, the idea is a little out there (but so is Kim)

There are several members and board members of the Phil who are WWII slave labor camp survivors or children of.

TO travel around the world to specifically entertain the regime that currently holds tens of thousands in slave labor camps disgusts me to no end. The Phil better turn this down publicly, and loudly.
