Judge: Reporters Must Reveal Sources in Anthrax Leak Case

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Five journalists must identify the government officials who leaked them details about a scientist under scrutiny in the 2001 anthrax attacks, a federal judge said Monday.

U.S. District Judge Reggie B. Walton ordered the reporters to cooperate with Steven J. Hatfill, who accused the Justice Department and FBI of violating the federal Privacy Act by giving the media information about the FBI's investigation of him.

The reporters named in the opinion are Michael Isikoff and Daniel Klaidman of Newsweek, Allan Lengel of The Washington Post, Toni Locy, formerly of USA Today, and James Stewart, formerly of CBS News.

Walton denied Hatfill's request to demand information from the media companies ABC, The Washington Post, Newsweek, CBS, The Associated Press, The Baltimore Sun and The New York Times.

The thought of Isikoff getting his salad tossed makes me smile.

I wondered what became of this case. They never quite proved their allegations against Mr. Hatfield, did they?

That’s what I thought but not quite in the salad analogy.

They never did but it looks like something good may come about it in the end, we get a leaker or two exposed.

I don’t support this. Eventually, there will a democrat administration in office, and you’ll all look at leaks and those who report them much differently. Think ahead, folks.

No, lock the TV in their cellblock onto Fox News, or broadcast Rush Limbaugh archived radio shows 24/7 over the PA.

Or better yet, broadcast Bush43 speeches over the PA 24/7. That would make anyone crack.

Reporters give that jive about them working in the public interest, when in fact they have their own agendas and use their positions not as a public trust, but a pulpit for their beliefs.

Hey Judge, waterboard them if they won't testify...

House Judiciary panel OKs journalists’ shield measure

Aug 2, 2007 - Washington — Legislation that would protect journalists from being forced to reveal confidential sources advanced in the House of Representatives Wednesday, despite continued opposition from Justice Department officials who warn it would hamper some criminal investigations.

The bill, which the House Judiciary Committee approved by a voice vote, would shield reporters from court orders compelling them to disclose their sources, except in limited cases, such as when there is “significant” harm to national security.

The House and Senate want the legislation protecting reporters because that’s their conduit to classified info without going directly to the leakers. The reporters give the congress critters inside info in exchange for a 2 line sound bite blasting this administration.

I’ve already posted. However, on second consideration, you make a good point. With the top crop of pubby candidates decidedly lacking, a RAT WH Admin (heaven forbid) is a distinct possibility. And if that occurs, we’ll be wanting those leaks.
