Two 50-something men who wear black robes, rarely speak in public and remain unrecognizable to most Americans are turning up in campaign playbooks from Oregon to Maine.
U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts and Associate Justice Samuel Alito may well become the bogeymen of 2008.
Their decisions in the last term on abortion, school desegregation and pay equity angered pillars of the Democratic constituency, already prompting Senate campaigns and issue advocates to invoke the Supreme Court in fundraising pitches and attacks on Republican incumbents.
When you are dealing with hypotheticals, when you talk about civil rights, privacy, Roe v. Wade, many people didnt take it seriously, said Ralph G. Neas, president of People for the American Way, a liberal advocacy group. Now, it is no longer a hypothetical, but it is real. That makes a big difference.
Five of the nine justices will be at least 70 by Election Day 2008, including three of the courts most liberal members.

To the liberals who want to make an issue of Federal judges ruling on the basis of the Constitution and not meddling in political issues, I have three words:
BRING IT ON!!!!!!!!!!!
Democrats should be vary worried. On average each of the liberal justices is 15 years older than the conservative justices. Next election is critical for them so they can replace their aging judges.
Not all of the voters take their instructions from “Ralph G. Neas, president of People for the American Way.”
For most conservatives, Alito and Roberts are President Bush’s single best accomplishment. It remains to be seen whether the libocrats and their cronies in the left wing press can succeed in demonizing them.
How horrible these men are! They refuse to allow us to kill babies!
In the frenzied minds of the left certainly. SCOTUS generally? Of course...
Meanwhile, white-hooded robed Democrat Senator Bryd ... sorry, wrong thread.

Yep, I guess they are worried. Contrary to what the MSM spews, most people, even liberal democrats, are against abortion.
“Exactly. If Hillary doesn’t win, they have to face the prospect of a conservative-dominated SCOTUS for a generation.”
Maybe, who would Rudy Nominate if he wins?
Ginsburg leaving or Stevens leaving is good, Rudy may just replace them with Breyer redux.
Rudy has a judicial advisory committee, which includes distringuished conservatives like Larry Thompson, Miguel Estrada, and Maureen Mahoney.
That and $2.95 will get you a cup of Starbucks.
The GOP leadership needs to take the offense on this issue and go directly to the American people to explain, in detail, the negative impact Liberal judges’ rulings (from the Supreme Court on down) have had on the country. That includes felons that have been set free to murder and molest again. Judges have endangered our national security as well as our personal security.
IMO, if these issues were spelled out and explained, the American people wouldn’t support Liberals in any shape or form.
What is truly chilling is that way too many otherwise normal Americans think it is a right.
At first I thought this article was advocating a Roberts/Alito ticket for ‘08. I like the sound of that!
You are right about this being a campaign issue. The GOP nominee must hammer away at how disastrous it will be if a Demo president appoints far left extremists to the federal courts. It could work as an issue though too many voters don’t really care, sadly. All they want to know is what the federal government will do for them.
“The GOP nominee must hammer away at how disastrous it will be if a Demo president appoints far left extremists to the federal courts.”
Very true. The Court is improved, but still has a way to go. A couple more appointments are needed to correct it.
Thank you President Bush!
Not enough people are aware of the problems that result from lefties on the court even though we have been living with these consequences for decades! How much worse is crime in America because of soft judges? The cost to society have been enormous. Same thing with a position like attorney general.
Having said that, it is sad to think some of the most liberal Supreme Court justices in modern history, including Warren, Stewart, Brennan, and Souter, were all appointed by Republican presidents.
The GOP, if they had any brain cells left, had better make judges the issue. Making judges the issue is a great way for Republicans to expose the fraud of Rodents masking themselves as conservatives.
They may get a chance to talk about activist judges in ‘08, as the California Supreme Court is going to rule on homosexual marriage in California. They expect a ruling by Spring of ‘08. If they rule for homosexual marriage, that will ignite that issue again and the role of activist judges in making laws. And it will ignite it right in the middle of the presidential campaign.
