Sanctuary Cities ((Essay by Fred Thomspon)

If you listen to folks who oppose immigration and border enforcement, you get the feeling they think we put locks on our doors to keep everybody out. The truth is we have locks so we can choose who comes in.

An example of what happens when we don’t make the choice took place August 4th when three Newark, New Jersey, college students with great promise were executed, gangland style. The killers’ ringleader was apparently an illegal alien indicted twice in 2007 for felonies, including the rape of a kindergarten-aged girl.

Why would such a person be set free instead of being handed over to authorities for deportation? The answer is that Newark is a “sanctuary city” which bans cooperation between local officials and federal immigration officials. More than 60 sanctuary zones, including 30 of America’s largest cities, provide a national networked haven for foreign and organized criminals who recruit and operate outside those areas as well. These sanctuaries include Cambridge, Massachusetts; Los Angeles, California; Detroit, Michigan; Chicago, Illinois; Austin and Houston, Texas; Denver, Colorado; and New York City.

The consequences of “sanctuary cities” may be most obvious in the city that became the first in 1979 — Los Angeles. According to the Center for Immigration Studies, a confidential California Department of Justice study from the mid-1990’s showed then that at least 60 percent of the members of L.A.’s most violent gangs, with membership in the tens of thousands, were illegal aliens. Of all outstanding murder warrants in Los Angeles, 95 percent are for illegal aliens. Frustrated police say they are powerless to pick up even well-known, previously deported felons.

I hope you realize I was NOT predicting $11 a head lettuce, but rather pointing out one of the things that side always threatens.

Frankly, I would rather pay $11 a head for lettuce, or more likely do without, than see what is happening to our great country as a result of millions of illegal immigrants flooding out country.

DCprofiteer wants to pretend that this is 'your' problem, not the issue in the 'nation as a whole'. That is bull.

You live in a rural area of seemingly modest means. That should be a good life but you need to be on your toes because of the illegals.

I live in an upscale NYC suburb where the cheapest house on 60x120 starts @ $750k. (fwiw, my neighbor on one side is an engineer from Peru with one son USMC and the other AF and my neighbor on the other side is a Christian from India who is a psychologist...both legal...both friends).

Just yesterday afternoon I was in a pizza place with my grandson when we saw the Police chopper making a low circular search just to the west. I knew what it was right away.

A call to the precinct confirmed it...a home invasion in broad daylight. They got two of the three scumbags...both described as day-laborers (just good striving folks whom DCP might hire). Three weeks ago a 16 year old girl was raped by similarly described guys in her own home just four blocks over.

Adrienne Shelley was an independent film-maker and actress of some note. She lived in the city. She was choked to death by an illegal day-laborer working on another apartment in her own building (imagine the terror of her last minutes DCP, and give us another 'YAWN'). Just another good, hard worker whom DCP might have hired.

As noted above, an illegal drank, got behind the wheel and killed. This was yesterday in DCP's own backyard (maybe DCP actually knew this killer).

The country, the suburbs, the city...no place is safe. But for those like DCprofiteer nothing matters but the money.

He is the enemy.

re: Have we become so accustomed to what is sometimes called “creeping socialism” that we’ve grown to accept it as the cost of doing business???

In a word, YES. Not only have we come to accept it as a cost doing business we now find that we’re considered racist if we express unhappiness with how the situation has been allowed to grow to such levels.

I’m pretty sure the Left’s plan was to keep increasing the number of people slopping at the public trough that by the time it became onerous enough for everyone to reset it the numbers would preclude doing anything about it. Looks to me like they are on the verge of doing just that.

I have no idea how to restore this country to its original greatness, but I sincerely fear that if something isn’t done we will go the way of history’s other great civilizations.

"Really? Where did you read Fred saying specifically that he will give amnesty to nonviolent illegals?

I believe Fred has said ENFORCE the current laws on the books and SECURE the borders....resulting attrition will be one effective solution. Tancredo has suggested the same.."

It's like I've been saying all along. DC is clearly pro - "good" illegal alien amnesty and is supporting Fred for the very reasons I have stated I will NOT. I have been repeatedly attacked for pointing out that Fred's ENTIRE statement on the issue MUST be looked at. You cannot know the truth if you choose to consider only the parts of his statement you find acceptable and ignore the rest.

Tancredo and Hunter have both stated that they will use attrition through enforcement to handle the illegal immigration problem. Yes, Fred has too, but neither Tancredo nor Hunter have said that they oppose a "blanket" amnesty and to my knowledge neither has ever used that word. Neither has said, "figure out some way to make some differentiation between the kind of people that we have here" and neither have said, "You're going to have to, in some way, work out a deal where they can have some aspirations of citizenship but not make it so easy that it's unfair to the people waiting in line and abiding by the law."

Now, tell me, because I'm curious.... If you think Fred is not preparing to 'compromise' by determining who is here and giving amnesty to the majority of "good" illegal aliens, exactly WHO do you think Fred was referring to in those bolded statements?

“But, thanx for y’all who clued me in to Fred being pro-amnesty.”

Unfortunately, there are some Fredheads who absolutely refuse to see it (ignore it because they think he’s the only person who can beat Guiliani/Hillary?) and then there are others who, for the same reason they’ve supported Bush’s CIR (cheap labor/economy), support it.

As someone who contributes actively to the illegal immigration threads, I am surprised by the number of people who are adamantly opposed to giving amnesty to any illegal aliens, yet support a candidate who will.

Amazing...

I’m rapidly losing hope for what’s left of this country. What a lousy world we’re leaving for our children.

I'm not supporting Fred Thompson because of his 'implied' position on illegal immigration.

While a huge issue, immigration takes a back seat to confiscatory taxation and national security in dealing with the radical Islamic threat.

“The one and only. (They didn’t just break the mold they smashed it)”

The correct term is...

“After they made him they broke the mold,.... then they beat the piss out of the mold maker.”

( I used to build molds )...lol
