For three days, Mike McConnell, the director of national intelligence, had haggled with congressional leaders over amendments to a federal surveillance law, but now he was putting his foot down. "This is the issue," said the plain-spoken retired vice admiral and Vietnam veteran, "that makes my blood pressure rise."

Democratic leaders wanted something in return: the release of long-sought administration documents describing the controversial warrantless wiretapping program . . . The administration declined to release the documents . . .
While the exchange was not a quid pro quo, the (rat)senators essentially said, "You give us the documents we want, and we'll give you the legislation . . .
But whatever you do, do not ever question their patriotism.

They also worried that providing warrantless authority to spy on targets other than foreign terrorism suspects would lead to potentially abusive monitoring of Americans innocently in contact with foreign targets. Yeah, our WaPo journalists don't want to get caught communicating with terrorists.

It was won by the sane people who remember what happened the morning of 9/11.

potentially abusive monitoring of Americans innocently in contact with foreign targets.well then... if they are so innocent, they will be more than happy to tell what they know about the terrorists, right???

McConnell has always been one of the best in my opinion. A very smart guy. None of the glamor guys like Romney, Guiliani and Thompson impress me like McConnell.

Interesting...in the entire article, THAT was the line that jumped out at me as well and I was going to quote it and comment on it.
You beat me to it!

Ann Coulter hit the nail on the head with the opening two sentences of her book “Treason” when she wrote (and I quote from memory):
“Everyone says that liberals love their country too. No they don’t.”
THAT is why I am an Ann Coulter fan. She hurt their feelings? So sorry.

>>McConnell viscerally objected to a Democratic proposal to limit warrantless surveillance of foreigners’ communications with Americans to instances in which one party was a terrorism suspect.<<
I hope this article is wrong.
Have we really approved warrantless wiretapping where neither party is a suspect? If that’s true then I think we have done something very bad.

Next 9/11 type attack on this country, "W" has gotta' round up the Democrat leadership elite and imprison them for the duration.
There's simply no other way ~ we cannot have enemy combatants present in Congress or running the news media.

What “bad”? These are enemy aliens abroad; not citizens inside the United States. If you required a warrant for this sort of surveillance what court would you use? None of our courts have extraterritorial jurisdiction.
