Dallas County Sheriff Lupe Valdez claims she is the target of Republicans who oppose change and want to get back at Democrats.
With the 2008 general election still 15 months away, the Dallas County sheriffs race already is showing signs of getting nasty.
Local Republicans, still reeling from the results of November 2006, have taken square aim at Democratic Sheriff Lupe Valdez, who in 2004 became the first member of her party to capture the post in 30 years.
And Valdez also the first woman, the first lesbian and the first Hispanic to serve as Dallas County sheriff isnt backing away from a fight.
The comment has been, Shes the one who started it, weve got to bring her down to prove its not happening, Valdez said, referring to Republicans reaction to recent Democratic gains. Im the target, and what happens when youre the target? They will find anything and everything. When people are desperate, they will do anything to get back to where they were, and I think desperate measures will come out. We just have to be ready to meet the challenge.
As for right now, the challenge may seem a little daunting.
Republicans and other opponents have seized upon recent media reports detailing issues related to Valdezs department.
Its really a poor situation, said Mark Walz, executive director of the Dallas County Republican Party. Lupe Valdez has done literally nothing to address the problems at the jail. She has completely mismanaged her prisoners, her budget and her staff, and its clear to everyone in Dallas County that the sheriffs department needs new management.
Three Republicans already have indicated they plan to run for sheriff. They are former Irving Police Chief Lowell Cannaday, Cockrell Hill Police Chief Catherine Smit and Mesquite Police Lt. Charlie Richmond. Valdez also will face at least one opponent in the March Democratic primary Peter Schulte, a county prosecutor and political newcomer.
Anything is better than the current sheriff, and we will definitely have a well-qualified and well-funded Republican candidate who can take back the sheriffs department and put it back in order, Walz said.
In an interview with Dallas Voice on Wednesday, Aug. 8, Valdez addressed several of the recent media reports specifically. In general, she said shes been forced to deal with a the mess she inherited from previous administrations in the face of inadequate funding from the Commissioners Court.
She also said there are many who would prefer to keep the status quo.
We continue to make progressive changes, she said. Is there a group that doesnt want this? Of course. Any change brings about resistance.
Perhaps the most vicious attack against Valdez thus far came in the form of Dallas County Republican Party Chairman Kenn Georges recent post on the partys Web site. The post compared Valdez to former Precinct 5 Constable Mike Dupree, who resigned in June amid allegations of sexual harassment and pleaded to a misdemeanor charge of abusing his official capacity.
From Constable Mike Dupree to Sheriff Lupe Valdez, the Democrats record on law enforcement in Dallas County is disgraceful, the post read. We have tried repeatedly to warn voters about the dangers of electing unqualified and unprincipled Democrats to important county offices.
Kirk McPike, Valdezs campaign manager, said he believes the post was designed to draw attention to the fact the sheriff is a lesbian. Dupree is gay.
During her campaign four years ago, Valdez was criticized by both her Republican opponent, Danny Chandler, and the ultraconservative Eagle Forum as being likely to promote a prohomosexual agenda.
It is so obvious on its face that they are trying to appeal to sort of an anti-gay mindset with these quotes and these personal attacks, McPike said of Georges post. I think its really indicative of where the Republican Party is in Dallas County and nationally that this is all they have left. Its really sad.
Salz, meanwhile, defended the post, saying it has nothing to do with Valdezs sexual orientation.
I think that if you look at it, the local Democrats track record in our justice system is a joke, and theyre the two most shining examples of why you need change, Salz said. Her campaign manager is incorrect.
As for Valdez, she said she is unsure whether the fact shes a lesbian will again be an issue in the race.
I dont know what the homosexual agenda is, she said. My agenda is fairness and equality and law enforcement for all people.
It must be the in-thing among lezzies, to shave eyebrows and heads, the Yul Brynner macho look!
Why is this woman even considered a citizen of the United States?
Figuratively or literally ?
“Dallas County Sheriff Lupe Valdez claims she is the target of Republicans who oppose change and want to get back at Democrats.”
Yes, and your point is?
“Dallas County has a lesbian sheriff?”
No great shock.
My cousin lives in North Dallas and he says that Dallas was considered
sort of a progressive/utopian kind of town in early years.
Houston had a very politically-active gay population in the 1980s...
but that took a real hit when AIDS/HIV took hold.
IIRC, even one AIDS victim did a swan dive off his high-rise patio;
this was well before the AIDS drug cocktail was developed.
quagmire!
impeach!
oh, it's a dem. ...
Bush's fault!
It’s always windy in Ft. Worth because Dallas sucks.
I think it is a cultural thing. A great many hispanic women either shave or pluck their eyebrows and then draw a curvy line to take their place.
“She needs to find a Sharpee & fix those eyebrows.”
She needs a minister and a therapist...her problems go way beyond her eyebrows.
LOL. The former, but I have no doubt that he wished it had been the latter.
;^)
All I know is that a little white lesbian policeperson with many complaints against her from fellow officers, and no action against her because of her uber-protected class, shot and killed an even tinier (male) teenaged Hispanic suspect in the back while he was lying face down in the street here in Austin. She was fired, but of course she’s now suing to get her job back.
Lesbian cops are given a free pass.
Ahhh ... good boy! You remembered to take your stupid pills this morning.
We lost all the judges last year, too. I think the only Republican judges left in Dallas County are the ones who weren’t up for reelection.
A limp.
If she had a disability they’d have to make her a saint too.
Gadzooks! Do they even have any straight cops... in the Democratic Peoples of Austin anymore? With the Liberal Democrats & Ronnie Early in power there we known there is not any more crime... nor poverty... nor illness... etc...
Why are democrats so afraid to fight for their elections. She should only worry about being reelected and not worry about what Republicans are doing. Obviously she has no faith in herself if she has to have a story saying it is unfair that I have challengers in the election. That has always amazed me about Democrats.
