President Bush telephoned baseball slugger Barry Bonds on Wednesday and congratulated him for breaking the career home run record in major league baseball.
"He is a really good hitter," the president said to reporters on his way out of an economic briefing. "I said 'congratulations.'"
Bonds on Tuesday night broke Hank Aaron's record of 755 home runs. Bonds, an outfielder with the San Francisco Giants, hit No. 756 at his home park.
Bush said it was "my honor" to call Bonds.

“Among the markets that say that President George W. Bush is doing a good job, the one he can take the most satisfaction from is U.S. Treasury bills.”
Oh, you mean that Bond.

Why is the leader of the free world expected to call up every sports "hero" (and I use that term in that context very loosely) who sets some sort of record to congratulate him or her.
It's only a stupid game, for pete's sake, whereas the real heroes are overseas taking it to the bad guys. This kind of stuff just ticks me off...

I hope whoever caught the ball immediately took out a permanent marker and wrote S-T-E-R-O-I-D-S-! around the circumference of the ball, and then threw it back.

I suppose he is criticized if he does, and if he doesn’t.

Bonds played for the Pirates for a while. Fans here heard all the time what a great player he was supposed to be. He stunk. And he whined, moaned and complained all the time. People wailed and gnashed their teeth when he went to San Francisco. All I could say then was “good riddance.”
I’m happy for his achievement. But I’ll never like the guy as long as I live.

I’d be more concerned about those calls the democrats have been making to the terrorists.

The real heroes overseas are fighting to preserve a way of life that includes sporting events and the achievenments that go with them.

And given President Bush’ baseball history a ten minute call is not that big a deal. Some people just like to bitch, I think.
