An ancient skull and upper jawbone from two early branches of the human family tree -- Homo erectus and Homo habilis -- suggest the early human ancestors may have lived close together for half a million years, researchers said on Wednesday.
The fossils, discovered in eastern Africa, challenge the understanding that humans evolved one after another like a line of dominoes, from ancient Homo habilis to Homo erectus and eventually to Homo sapiens, or modern people.
"There has been a view that has suggested habilis very slowly evolved into erectus," said Susan Anton, a professor of anthropology at New York University. "Now we have the two cohabitating, so that can no longer be the case."

Same bed layer with the fossils found by Leaky.
I was not aware that Chief Powhatan was an agent for the CIA specializing in black ops using his super tracking skills and his quiet, stealthy mocassin attack powers! That’s awesome. Diversity is strength.
Now evidence of Powhatan and European Americans in the same bed layer would show that they lived contemporaneously.
BTW, all of us today are going down pretty much into the same strata as all of our ancestors going back 50 generations, and maybe more.
That does not mean we are contemporaries.
Now, regarding Chief Powhatan, best any future anthropoligist will be able to determine, he was quite possibly the founder of the OSS as well ~ and yet he did not need to travel more than 10 miles from his home in his lifetime.
His former bedroom will be found to have been contaminated with mercury, and questions will arise regarding his extensive use of coal considering the great number of primitive proto-cement outlining the foundation of his quarters.
I guess a flood or some such event could jumble up older layers of fossils with more recent . . .
Actually, I believe Powhatan had his seat on the Pamunkey River, further south, from which he administered a brutal regime that was responsible for wiping out at least one tribe, and absorbing several others through forced intermarriages.
but I digress...
I remember videotaping one of the early excavations at the current Jamestown archaeological site as part of the documentary crew. They removed the skeleton of a colonist who had been shot in the leg, and before they covered up the hole, they threw in numerous artifacts that were unmistakably modern, including a current penny, a candy wrapper, and some other nonperishable items. The lead on the site said that was so anyone else who dug it up would know that it had been disturbed, and when it happened.
There’s a Space Shuttle launch today and they choose to dup these kinds of threads.
Given the tremendous value Great Falls had I take it that his "headquarters" must necessarily have been West of the Falls, and that puts it just East of the CIA.
This was probably a seasonal capital with he and his entourage of favorites (and tribal enforcers) moving South for the Winter.
Some analysts place the John Smith captivity and Pocahontas story at what is now called Rosslyn ~
But you are absolutely right about his totalitarian streak. Wouldn't put it past the old guy to eat his enemies, or least favorite courtiers for that matter, during times of drought and famine.
As Pam Anderson said,
thanks for the enhancement.
Sort of like how chaotic models lead to uniformity and stability, right?
Ultimately, yes, they settle down into a less chaotic state as the more volatile components react with one another and either mutually destroy themselves or recombine into something less reactive.
We’re still in the mutual destruction phase, I believe.
Over here! Over here!
Did you read that in a scientific text or on a creationist website?
I was thinking that too.
(returning to crevo lurk mode)
LOL!!
That's not funny.
