Mitt Does JFK

"My religion is for me and how I live my life," he declared. "I don't impose all my faiths and beliefs on you." For example, he noted that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints doesn't approve of booze and that he doesn't drink. But he won't be pushing for a new constitutional amendment banning alcohol......

(US News) For more than a year, there has been talk inside Mitt Romney's presidential campaign (mittromney.com) that the GOP candidate would give a JFK-ish speech explaining his religion--he's a Mormon--and how it would or wouldn't affect his presidency.

Well, it wasn't what they had in mind, but an unscripted, passionate, and argumentative Romney let loose last week during some off-air discussions with Iowa's WHO Radio host Jan Mickelson. It was caught by the radio studio's cameras. It's must-watching and hearing for anybody interested in the issue, as Romney, like JFK before him, brushed aside any concerns that he would let his religion rule his administration.

"My religion is for me and how I live my life," he declared. "I don't impose all my faiths and beliefs on you." For example, he noted that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints doesn't approve of booze and that he doesn't drink. But he won't be pushing for a new constitutional amendment banning alcohol.

His staffers thought it was so good that they posted it on a YouTube page (youtube.com/watch?v=-G9hydflwEQ). Campaign spokesman Kevin Madden tells me that "it shows Governor Romney at his best: tough, passionate, confident in his convictions and engaging. It could be titled MittTV Unplugged." Madden adds that the reaction has been good so far.

"Once we reviewed the interview in full, we thought that it showed Governor Romney in an unvarnished setting that folks would be interested in seeing. Judging from the reaction, supporters and potential supporters are really responding in a positive manner."

As a Christian, I think I'd be more comfortable voting for Romney than for somebody from some Independent Christian denomination, or for a Baptist or a Roman Catholic....

I like Romney muy mucho. Especially because he has a strong Christian Faith.

As an avid Catholic, I’d have no problem voting for a mormon. Can’t vote for a flip flopping phony though.

JFK was far more conservative than any islamocommucrat of today, and,

BINGO!

I’d even live with the suicidal presumption that a Mormon Candidate might have a 5% disadvantage from the small minority that would swing their vote away, rendering him unelectable these days.

Parody of Allan Sherman's "Hello Muddah, Hello Fadduh" (itself a parody of Ponchielli's "Dance of the Hours")
Lyrics by M. Spaff Sumsion

Hello Hillary, Hey Giuliani
Here I am with President Romney
How he won this was a riot
Newsweek caught you two in bathrobes at the Hyatt

Mitt says our land needs reformin'
'Cause it's not completely Mormon
So protesters must speak softly
And the War on Drugs now targets tea and coffee

For his talks with dignitaries
Mitt just sends the missionaries
And state dinners - gee, they're mellow
All the heads of state bring casserole and Jell-o

Heads on Rushmore - you would dig 'em
Mitt just sculpted Brother Brigham
And the anthem needed switchin'
So it's now "I Hope They Call Me on a Mission"

Oh my word
He got elected
Oh my gosh
How unexpected
'Cause he's quite
Distinctly male and white
Despite
His V.P. Gladys Knight

Oh my heck
The far right trounces
Mormon lives
So Mitt renounces
Plural wives
But deep down they're OK
As long as none are gay

Now I don't know where we're headin'
But it might be Armageddon
So you sinners better move it
'Cause we're in the latter days and Mitt will prove it

I must meet the Elders' Quorum
At the White House here in Orem
So I'll run now - this is awesome
We'll be swearing in Chief Justice Donny Osmond!

Shamelessly borrowed from Spaff.com

What did JFK say about the AWB? Probably nothing.

Just throwing out there because the Mitt fans are always referring to Reagan’s position on an AWB, to justify Mitt's anti gun position.

The sad thing is there are people who actually think this is what would happen...

Still, it's fun to tweak 'em.

Okay so he’s established that he’s willing to disobey his religious beliefs in the interest of political expediency. This makes me want to trust him to run the country WHY?

Sorry, but I do not trust ayone who refuses to stand for the things he ostensibly believes in. If he doesn’t vote his religious convictions, how can he be trusted?

He said NOTHING like that. He will not disobey his church's beliefs, but he will not force them on others either. In other words, he will not act like the Taliban in Afghanistan. That is the difference between us and them.

I like the way Byron York from the Corner at the National Review Online put it:

Romney on the Radio

I would urge people to watch the Mitt Romney video that Kathryn posted below. It is by far the best performance I have seen from Romney in this campaign; in his back-and-forth with an extremist radio host, Romney drops his sometimes too-polished public persona and speaks, apparently, from the heart, and with a bit of anger to boot. He is dealing with a man, WHO radio's Jan Mickelson, who apparently believes a president should let the dictates of his church determine his actions in office, as well as overrule "aberrant" Supreme Court decisions he doesn't like. Romney is especially good in his discussion with Mickelson during commercial breaks, when they are not on the air. The video is 20 minutes long, but worth the watch.

I am not a Romney supporter, but your post doesn’t make sense. Romney said that he would not push for a constitutional amendment to ban alcohol, he didn’t say he advocted drinking or that he would drink alcohol himself. If the only way to stand for what one believes in is to insist on laws incorporating one’s religious beliefs, then I guess we should expect a Baptist president to require baptsim by immersion, a Roman Catholic to order the use of Holy water, etc.

My guess is that you don’t care for Romney on policy grounds, a legitimate stance to take. But don’t denigrate the guy because he refuses to violate the First Amendment.

Guess you won't be voting then? I can't think of anyone who hasn't flipped or flopped on some issue. And, as far as a bit of phoniness and self-aggrandizement ... well, that comes with the job description "politician" - except maybe not Duncan Hunter. ;-)

From 2010

I’m most impressed at how President Romney got the entire Middle East to go Mormon. No more suicide bombing for Abdul and Ahmed, now they are just polite guys on bikes out there peacefully proselytizing.

It was good. The best part is that it backfired on the snakehandling bigots.

I was kind of hoping they’d all go Catholic but why let the perfect be the enemy of the good.
