Thompson Taps Former Campaign Manager (third)

WASHINGTON (AP) - Fred Thompson on Wednesday tapped the man he credits with saving his 1994 Senate campaign to take over his likely presidential bid.

Bill Lacy, a former strategist for Ronald Reagan, Bob Dole and Republican National Committee, will run day-to-day operations of Thompson's committee to "test the waters" for a presidential run.

"He turned around my campaign for Senate in 1994 and, as I move toward a decision on whether to run for president, I am confident he will take our operations to the next level," Thompson, the former Tennessee senator and "Law & Order" actor, said in a statement.

"I'm here for the long haul," Lacy said in an interview from the committee's headquarters in a Virginia suburb. He said he has taken a leave of absence from his current post as the director of the Dole Institute of Politics at the University of Kansas in Lawrence, Kan.

Thompson is expected to officially enter the race Labor Day week, and is showing strongly in national polls and surveys in several early primary states. But a certain measure of turmoil has hit his preliminary campaign this summer.

It helped win the senate election for Fred with the largest margin in Tennessee history.

But go ahead and make stupid wisecracks.

It is hard to argue with a stretegy that put him in the top tier w/o spending mush $$ though

True, but don't forget he entered with much better name/face recognition than virtually any other candidate. We'll see how he handles the pressures of the stump.

No it didn’t, he lost that election. He only played a senator in the movies or on TV...

Or was that DA on TV and Senator for real...

Just wanted to announce that I still have the same campaign chair for my yet-announced campaign, which I plan to announce sometime in March 2009

Look!

It used to be: “This guy is a nobody”, “Nobody knows who he is.”

Now it’s: “He entered with much better name/face recognition than virtually any other candidate.”

Do you have a campaign sofa?

If not I have one.

It has some experience in local politics from some years ago, helped to support campaign staff during media processing...

“I’m here for the long haul,” Lacy said

“Lacy said he would not consider leaving the Dole Institute to work on Thompson’s campaign but might take a minor volunteer role if asked.”

Running a national presidential campaign may be a tad more difficult than running a winning Senate race in Republican friendly Tennessee. Personally, I have always rooted for Thompson. If he could get the nomination, he would destroy Hillary in the debates without saying a word. He looks Presidential and she doesn't. But it will take some organization to get the nomination, and so far this dithering over staff is not gaining my confidence.

>>>Fred needs to get started. To me this all feels dragged on.<<<

It's all the announced candidates that are dragging on and on at this point. And they will continue to drag as the campaign continues.

Fred hasn't dragged yet - and won't. He will provide fresh vitalization to what has become a lackluster bunch of politicians mouthing well worn platitudes.

Net - Fred will make the 2008 campaign interesting again....and the American public will thank him for it...and may reward him if he brings much needed fresh perspective!!!

What do mass murdering muslims have to do with how FDT is running the initial stages of his campaign?

It’s Summer. People are getting in their last vacations before school starts, going boating, to the beach, etc. It’s not a good time to get them to focus on politics for a while, for an announcement. Plenty of time for that, once Summer has wound down and the kids are back in school, and life is back to “normal”.

I agree. I’m quite aggravated over this nonsense - you are either running or not, Fred.

He's running (or so the rumor mill for the past 5 months goes) for President of the United States. It has everything to do with it. If we get infiltrated and hit severely I don't want him sticking his thumb in the air to see which way the wind blows before acting. I'm not bashing the guy, he's just establishing a character trait that I don't particularly want at this time in the White House if I've got what I feel are better alternatives.

Flame away...

He’s saved $50 million on his campaign, by not declaring early, from what I can tell.

I like a guy who can creatively save money.

That’s a valid viewpoint IMO. It just looks more and more like he’s avoiding the spotlight hoping the other candidates smear each other and he’s left as the default choice. Although admittedly effective in a general campaign, I vote my conscience. I’m interested to see how this plays out. Some of his lobbying issues also seem a bit vague to me. I’m not bashing the guy but he’s definitely not my first pick. If he puts off announcing again he’ll definitely wont be my second pick either.
