Thompson Taps Former Campaign Manager (third)

WASHINGTON (AP) - Fred Thompson on Wednesday tapped the man he credits with saving his 1994 Senate campaign to take over his likely presidential bid.

Bill Lacy, a former strategist for Ronald Reagan, Bob Dole and Republican National Committee, will run day-to-day operations of Thompson's committee to "test the waters" for a presidential run.

"He turned around my campaign for Senate in 1994 and, as I move toward a decision on whether to run for president, I am confident he will take our operations to the next level," Thompson, the former Tennessee senator and "Law & Order" actor, said in a statement.

"I'm here for the long haul," Lacy said in an interview from the committee's headquarters in a Virginia suburb. He said he has taken a leave of absence from his current post as the director of the Dole Institute of Politics at the University of Kansas in Lawrence, Kan.

Thompson is expected to officially enter the race Labor Day week, and is showing strongly in national polls and surveys in several early primary states. But a certain measure of turmoil has hit his preliminary campaign this summer.

He’s got more campaign managers than Edwards has hairdressers.

This sort of answered questions I had on the other thread about what happened to Spencer Abraham...

“At the time, aides said former senator and energy secretary Spencer Abraham and a Florida GOP strategist, Randy Enwright, would take over the unofficial campaign. But that turned out to be a temporary solution”

And the other article took pains to point out that this Dole guy is NOT the campaign manager. They gave him some longer, vaguer title.

Test the waters? What’s left to test? Get on with it already!

This got old about 2 months ago. At this point I've got to go with Hunter. This 'testing the waters' Cra* is not what I want to see the next time muslims get lucky in this country with their intent to commit mass murder.

Who knows. I’m waiting patiently for Thompson to announce. When he does, well see if he is the real deal. We’ll akll see if his brand of conservatism sells. For now, FredT`s ability to knock down Giuliani’s support has been the biggest success of this early GOP primary season.

You’re guy, the Honorable California Congressman, Duncan Hunter, has been crafting a message for quite some time now. What has it got him? Nothing... nada... zippo... zero... zilch! Where is his campaign at? Stalled. Where is Hunter going? Nowhere! Good conservative, nice man, bad candidate.

Fred is lazy. He’ll start running if the other candidates catch up with him.

Yeah, and if he doesn’t get in the race now because he is busy helping NBC run their re-runs (for which I can only suppose he also gets money and plenty of it) then I believe we should look further for a candidate. He looks OK and sounds OK, but it seems he has interests which come before his participation in the coming election. Duncan Hunter does not have that problem. He might have problems, but not THAT problem.

Hey, it’s over for your candidate, all over except the crying. Why do you even bother? Fred’s the man, and it’s over before he’s even declared. Over.
