Drawings of G5 Fighter Handed Over to Manufacturer

Elaboration of working construction documentation (WCD) for the G5 fighter jet of Russia has been completed, RIA Novosti reported with reference to Air Forces Commander-in-Chief Col.-Gen. Alexander Zelin. The drawings have been passed to a manufacturer that will make a development prototype.

Most likely, the G5 aircraft developed by Sukhoi Design Bureau will be produced in series at facilities in Komsomolsk-on-Amur. A maker of engines will be determined via a tender.

Sukhoi Design Bureau has been developing a front aviation G5 fighter jet of PAK FA Project since late 1990s. The promising aircraft is also known under the names of I-21, T-50, Izdelije 701. According to the chiefs of Russia’s Air Forces, this jet will be tested in summer of 2009 and launched into mass production early in the next decade.

Knowing the Russians’ odd proclivity for building aircraft that look remarkably like ours, I would expect this to be something like the F22 or the F35.

Is this kind of like the Airbus A350 XWB Pie-In-The-Sky?

The pretty picture stage is a looooooong way from production. Though it does look like the Russkies are moving in the right direction. Note the Russian standard divertable upper air intakes for rough field work.

So is that how they work it? Their military draws up a plane and then wants it built as such, not that they ask for given specs and then manufacturers have to design something to meet the requirements?

No, its more like the F-18 on steriods w/ the sweep of the “wing”
starting much higher up the fuselage.

Without stealth no less.

Notice the twin tails angled markedly outward.

I can’t wait for the next edition of the Arms Race! We’ll win that
one too! Its so exciting!!!

I’m a bit surprised that it’s not an “F-22ski” myself.

The twin tails did seem a wee bit... conspicuous.

I think for marketing it HAS to look similar to the US planes.

It is a “same as” sales pitch.

Twin stabilizers and inlet/engine configuration of an F-15 with a Draken fuselage.

Umm,are you saying that the laws of aerodynamics have nothing to do with aircraft(or anything) looking similar??????

We’ll see how this turns out. Many times when Russia goes for a high-tech solution they have a lot of problems. Their history shows they are much better at producing more basic systems that are tough with a few unique features.

If they are trying to build a counter for the Raptor it will take them a LOT more than a couple of years to reach production. Maybe they aren’t even trying and this is really going to be a 4 1/2 generation aircraft like the Typhoon.

Kind of sad if your nation celebrates the “Pretty Picture” stage of development.

Kind of looks like a delta version of the MiG-29.

It looks like an interesting evolution of the MiG-29. Is it similar in size?

What, are you smoking Thai weed again?

Weren’t you at the lecture what said that the laws of aerodynamics have
been repealed!!?? And no! Don’t ask me for my notes or the homework
assignment!

Lift is irrelevant now!!!! Its all in the thrust component!

All you need is thrust!
