Alcohol Nanny Breathalyzers
American Spectator ^ | 07 aug 07 | Eric Peters

"Pre-emptive war" got us into a real mess in Iraq. So maybe we ought to think twice before adopting similar measures when it comes to traffic law. Specifically, when it comes to an idea floated by Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) to require that all new cars be fitted with an ignition interlock that can detect alcohol in the driver's system -- and shut the car down if it does.

Several large automakers (including GM, Ford, Toyota and Honda) also support the idea -- and are working on ways to get these things into new cars, maybe within the next two or three years, if not sooner.

Sounds OK in principle -- sort of like the idea of liberating Iraq. The devil's in the details, though.

They have road blocks aka 'sobriety" check points now. Do you really think that if these devices are installed that the road blocks will go away? I think not.

OF COURSE NOT! Nobody has really mentioned ho the insurance companies profit mightily by these sort of things, to the point they can afford to buy just about every town a "DUI Enforcement Unit". Take a look at how many towns in your area were given one of these fine vehicles at no charge by an insurance industry gorup, or an insurance company directly. Allstate bought the one for my town. I'm sure they've been repaid 10 times over inthe 2 years it's been since they did so.

Crawl back under your bridge, troll.

It's ironic indeed when a "troll" appears to have a better understanding of personal liberty than a long-time member of Free Republic.

someone else will come up with a circumventing way/device, for those that really are going to go ahead

Hey, no problemo. We'll just enact another law! Problem solved!

People will just figure out how to disable or bypass these things. In no time we’ll have a little industry develop where people manufacture and market kits people can install to disable the machines. DIY sites will offer instructions for disabling the machines. There is no way the government will be able to monitor them nearly as closely as they monitor the ignition interlock devices installed in vehicles of people have to install them because of DWI’s, and a lot of people figure out how to get around those machines. This won’t work, and it will end up costing us lots of money and causing all sorts of problems. I understand where you are coming from, but this is one of those instances where you need to be careful what you wish for because you just might get it.

Of course you could come up with scenarios such as that.

So,

STACK UP THE REALLY HAPPENED EVENTS like that . . . ADD UP ALL THOSE DEATHS . . .

stack them against all the deaths due to alcohol.

Include in all those deaths due to alcohol—the 200 people CLOSEST to you.

Would your attitude be the same?

BTW, the straight jacket-lifestyle of the socialist, globalists IS ON THE WAY. It will be far worse than your worst fears about alcohol breathalizers.

ID/MONITORING SLAGS—chip implants WILL BE HERE. The only escape will be God’s first elevator up or death.

That is a certainty. No other option. Alcohol monitors will be a far lesser concern.

Alcoholism is a form of selfish rebellion/addiction. It is not a hallmark of walking in obedient submission to God’s best for our lives and families.

It may temporarily anesthetize from the pains of tyrannical globalism. But it will continue to wear off rather frequently and one again has to face the realities involved.

DENIAL is not a route to TRUE FREEDOM or any other thing wonderful.

All YOUR closest loved ones slowly burning to death in a heap of mangled metal courtesy of an alcoholic

is NOT a wonderful symbol equal to the Stars and Stripes, mom and apple pie.

I’m rather torn about alcohol monitoring ignition systems.

But faced with the massive deaths—often extremely excruciatingly painful deaths—UNNECESSARY DEATHS and pain . . . something needs to change and it will NOT change voluntarily—alcoholics are too selfish, brazen and live too wholesale in DENIAL.

In some respects, alcoholics are terrorists in behalf of selfishness.

Talk to some of their victims. See how much they support your perspective.

But, contrary to public perception, I’m not truly the FR village idiot. I have worked extensively in alcohol treatment with many dozens of alcoholics—100’s actually.

I know that there’s not a single thing I could say or write that will ever change your opinion.

. . . court ordered on the 9th DRUNK DRIVING ARREST . . . having mangled his own body and the bodies of others in past incidents . . .

First thing out of his mouth: I DON’T NEED TO BE HERE. I DON’T HAVE AN ALCOHOL PROBLEM.

DENIAL is not a good survival skill or attitude.

Read between the lines. When you are arguing for the right not to have an alcohol interlock in your car, you're arguing for the right to drive drunk.

Great logic - if you argue for the right not to have a government observer in your house to watch your interactions with your children then you're arguing for the right to abuse children.

He’s also totally wrong. In many states you can be convicted of drunk driving if you are in the car and have the keys. They car doesn’t have to be turned on and it doesn’t have to be in motion.

Great point - here in GA, if a person decides that they've had to much to drink and decide to sleep it off in their car then they are guilty of drunk driving. As long as the keys to the car are assessable to the driver then that is a DUI.

This is a terrible law as it encourages those that have drank too much to try to drive home anyway.

The angel of Eternal Life came for him . . .

but he was protesting in favor of alcoholic wife beating . . . and his ticket was canceled.

The angel of Eternal Life came for him . . .

but he was marching in favor of alcoholic belting of 4 year old girls until their faces, legs and arms were bleeding pulpy masses of flesh . . . and his ticket was canceled.

The angel of Eternal Life came for him . . .

but he was protesting in behalf of alcoholic shooting up the neighborhood with dozens of dead family members—formerly beloved of the neighborhood . . . and his ticket was canceled.

The angel of Eternal Life came for him . . .

but he was protesting in behalf of alcoholic womanizing and the freedom to willy-nilly spread STD—particularly AIDS—as well as to shred the hearts of all the wives and children involved . . . and his ticket was canceled.

The angel of Eternal Life came for him . . .

but he was on an alcoholic rage shooting up the local post office with dozens of family members dead . . . and his ticket was canceled.

The angel of Eternal Life came for him . . .

but he was out joy riding—playing ROAD-RAGE-BUMPER-CARS in his Humvee . . . .several cars full of kids, wives, hubsands were afire and slowly losing their lives . . . and his ticket was canceled.

The angel of Eternal Life came for him . . .

but he was trapped in his alcohol soaked, burning 4 X 4 wedged into the wall of his mortgage company because of a foreclosure proceeding . . . 3 mortgage company employees were now scheduled for funeral services and weeping family members . . . and his ticket was canceled.

The angel of Eternal Life came for him . . .

but he was unconscious on the floor in front of the sofa, TV blaring . . . the dog bludgeoned to death by a vase . . . the little woman strangled to death beside him . . . the frige empty . . . the cubard bare . . . children locked in a closet . . . and his ticket was canceled.

The angel of Eternal Life came for him . . .

but he’d already checked out for a different locale . . . much warmer than his last one . . . frozen to the ice by his fishing hole . . . with more than a dozen empty cans of beer beside him . . . his ticket had already been voided.

The angel of Eternal Life came for him . . .

but he was racing in a drunken rage for a massive freeway support at 110 mph with wife and kids screaming beside him . . . and his ticket was canceled.

Supporting such idiocy . . .

the NEW/OLD patriotic freedom of choice.

Long live the bloodied flag, mom and apple pie—the new symbols of freedom.

You're absolutely right. It's a classic example of government interference that produces an effect opposite that which was intended.

Ahhhhhh, so the RAT is the person trying to limit the pain and suffering due to alcoholism

and the TRUE BLUE SYMBOL OF AUTHENTIC AMERICAN VALUES PATRIOTISM

is the drunk mildly trapped in his 4 X 4 against a tree while the family filled van on the other side of the road burns the family to crispy critters . . . and the EMT’s are not even near the scene, yet.

Makes perfect sense. /sar

I for one welcome our new ant overloads and can be useful in rounding up others to toil in your underground sugar caves ....

But seriously, Why not simply make the penalty for driving under the influence total loss of all possesion, no prison, we don't want to pay for it, but we confiscate everything they own, problem solved.

Why should people who don’t drink have to pay a dime more for their car?

Quit being a dope. This idea SUCKS.

= = =

Thanks for the thoughtful assaultive personal attack.

So . . . are you also in favor of the great AMERICAN freedom to keep pit-bulls with their chains embedded in their necks . . . fighting to the death for personal gain?

Is recreational alcoholic wife-bashing also a great patriotic freedom, in your perspective?

What do you mean it has nothing to do with alcohol?

How is it that ignition alcohol monitors have NOTHING to do with alcohol? I guess we’ve entered the Twilight Zone.

I’m not thrilled by the prospect of all vehicles so equipped.

But I’m LESS pleased by an infinite degree with the bloody mayhem we now have.

SO, WHAT IS YOUR CLEVER SOLUTION TO THE BLOODY DEADLY MAYHEM WE NOW HAVE . . . if you keep the ignition monitors off the market?

Oh, that’s right . . . you’re not really interested in saving lives . . . only in saving selfish “freedoms.”

By all means, ignore them.

I don’t pretend to write one size fitting all.

But I do like variety in several dimensions in my writing. Goodness, I must have left out the bolded colorful text.
