Alcohol Nanny Breathalyzers

"Pre-emptive war" got us into a real mess in Iraq. So maybe we ought to think twice before adopting similar measures when it comes to traffic law. Specifically, when it comes to an idea floated by Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) to require that all new cars be fitted with an ignition interlock that can detect alcohol in the driver's system -- and shut the car down if it does.

Several large automakers (including GM, Ford, Toyota and Honda) also support the idea -- and are working on ways to get these things into new cars, maybe within the next two or three years, if not sooner.

Sounds OK in principle -- sort of like the idea of liberating Iraq. The devil's in the details, though.

Actually, I believe that 0.20% was the pre-MADD standard set by physicians and scientists.

Source and link, please.

“Thank you for injecting some common sense and the voice of experience into this thread. It’s about time.”

I can see you are lonely on this thread. You haven’t responded to my post that even sitting in a car while drunk is DUI. So the test could and would be used as evidence. Lack of reporting to the police or lack of a police presence does not mean a crime wasn’t committed.

Education and personal responsibility are the answer.

I had a friend killed by a gun.

Ban them too. Friends and guns.

Ban tall buildings and planes too.

Women have abortions too. Let us ban women. NO man has ever had an abortion.

"Politicians need these devices, so they assume that the little people do."

LOL. Let's require all politicians to face mandatory use of such devices everywhere: to propose legislation, to vote on legislation, to leave home for the office, to leave the office to go anywhere at all, etc. That would do a lot of good for the world! Maybe they'd stop spending our money "like drunken sailors" (ok, an unfair insult to drunken sailors everywhere).

How about this scenario?

Some guy celebrating his birthday, has a couple of beers sitting at home, his wife all of a sudden decides she is having her baby 5 weeks early.....

Or how about this scenario...

These 4 guys are out camping in the middle of nowhere, they don't plan on leaving for 2 more days. They are having good time, fishing, drinking beer etc...Winds pickup, and wammo, massive wildfire moving fast...All are found dead two days later, burned to death. Keys were still in the ignition, one was found behind the wheel.

That's what ambulances are for.

And if they live rurally, 30 miles from the nearest paramedics/hospital?

OK, how about #165 scenario?

I've got another 500 scenarios that could cause death or injury to those not being able to start their vehicle immediately.

But start with #165.

Don’t forget theres the 500 different examples of them malfunctioning.

Or of the rapist spraying some mouthwash into the tester so his target is easy prey.

Our business can’t compete in this forsaken global market because they are regulated to death. The answer is not to force more regulations on them or us.

People are the problem. Not beer, or cars, or lack of anti-lock breaks. Turning over every last civil liberty to big brother is not the answer.

The next version of the device will probably call the police automatically.

Or maybe it will take over the car and drive you straight to prison, were we can all be nice and “safe”...

These will keep the purchase price of the car reasonable.

If you mean $0 - that's reasonable. Nobody should buy that which they don't want.

“It has been understood for quite a while that MADD’s overall agenda is total Prohibition of alcohol.”

Next on their agenda is a finger sensor to be built into the handle of all new refrigerators which will not allow the door to open if you’ve already consumed more than one beer in the past week.

My deepest sympathies to you and your family.

It is tempting to think that "we can stop this", but the truth is that we can only reduce the number of these tragedies to a certain minimum level, and attempting to get beyond that level will result in negative consequences that are as serious and deadly as what we sought to eliminate.

For example we could ban all alcohol, of course we tried and people still got it, and killed over it, and innocents died.

Worse yet the exact wrong people gained enormous power from the effort and they still plague us today.

So we just put testers in cars, ok? Well, the Kennedys will get exemptions, and the people they kill will be character assassinated as well as murdered, with the cooperation of the same cops that just ticketed you for not keeping the tester in your car clean enough.

Unfortunately, life is not fair and not without risk. Government can lie to you and say they will take away the risk, but all they will take away are your rights, freedom and liberty, just "let them stop this".

“MADD used to be a great organization, they now are not. They are more interested in money than in public safety. They are also totally controlled by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.”

For those of you who don’t know the relevance of that comment, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation is part and parcel of the Johnson & Johnson Company, a large consumer goods and medical products nanny group headquartered in the People’s Republic of New Jersey.
