The GOP Three: An August Analysis (Romney/Thomson/Giuliani)
Townhall ^ | 8/7/07 | Matt Lewis

Posted on 08/07/2007 8:18:43 AM PDT by teddyballgame

It's August, and it's important to remember that four years ago, exactly, Howard Dean and Joe Lieberman were doing well -- and John Kerry was starting to fall apart. Still, punditry goes on, and, as such, here are my thoughts on three of the candidates ...

1. Mitt Romney - Some people think that video of him getting angry at the WHO radio host made him look bad. Not me. It made me like him even more. One of my criticisms of Romney has been that he seems a bit phony. In this clip, we got a glimpse of the real Mitt Romney. And yes, real people get angry. Now, whether or not this will turn into an "I paid for this microphone," moment remains to be seen. Still, I don't think it hurts him (and it might help him)...

2. Fred Thompson - E.J. Dionne writes today that, "... Thompson's decision to delay his entry into the race until the fall is looking like a mistake."

1. Thompson...first they ignored, then they discounted him now everything he does is a mistake. This gets tiresome.

You are leaning far to the port side. Careful, you might tip over.

I do know that Thompson may have made a mistake when he said that the Virginia Tech massacre could have been avoided if the students were armed. Yes, it would have been avoided but his mistake was political. The statement made him sound like a gun nut because universities have historically had problems with shootings and massacres. What he should have said is that he supports armed security guards with concealed weapons or something to that effect. He may have alienated too many in the middle with that statement.

I keep forgetting..whats the downside of Thompson declaring for President now if he really wants to be President? I just cant remember whats on that list...

One downside might be that he really doesent want to run, but there must be others.

Right, we need a spineless weasel who toes the line of political correctness.

Like Mitt.

“... universities have historically had problems with shootings and massacres.”

Because a university is a target-rich (i.e., largely unarmed) environment.

“The statement made him sound like a gun nut “

So now anyone who supports the second amendment (you know the one that says the right to keep AND BEAR arms shall not be infringed) is a gun nut? In case you don’t realize, bear arms in 18th century vernacular meant to carry a firearm.

I expect to get this garbage from the left. Now I’m hearing about gun nuts from the right???

First Thomson says he’ll announce in July. Then in August. Now in September. Next he’ll say January. This is getting tiresome.

“First Thomson says he’ll announce in July. Then in August.”

Thompson NEVER said any such thing and I challenge you to show me that he did.

Okay, his staff did it. Big deal. However it was done, it's getting tiresome.

I beg to differ again, nobody in his campaign authorized to make such a statement has done so.

It’s been MSM anonymous sources and pundit speculation. They are blaming Thompson for not announcing when “they” thought he would or should.

I don’t get it. You think it’s cool to see a baby attacked? Believe me I am no baby .. and I make up my own mind. It’s called free will.
