OK, Ill admit it. From a theological standpoint, Mormonism is just plain weird.
When I read the story of Joseph Smith, notorious New York con man, finding golden tablets he read using magic rocks while peering into a hat, I snicker too. The special garment, the polygamy problem, the Osmonds - its all more than a bit odd.
Thats Mormonisms problem. But could someone please tell me how its Mitts problem, too?
Left-wingers at the New Republic suggest that Romney has secretly converted to Mormon fundamentalism and plots against the Constitution. Right-wing radio hosts insist that, as president, a real Mormon would crush the constitutional powers of the U.S. Supreme Court. Again and again, Mitts faith is portrayed as a risk to American democracy.
Im not planning on voting for the guy (Im currently leaning Giuliani), but of the dozens of reasons to vote against a President Romney, his faith isnt one of them.
Im not arguing that religious questions have no place in politics, not at all. Tell me you could never vote for a Muslim president because of Islams ongoing problems with anti-Semitism and terror, and I get your point. Its a legitimate concern about a uniquely problematic religion in todays world.
Tell me you couldnt vote for a Jewish president because of the political problems it would create for America in the Middle East, and I get that, too. Once again, I dont have to agree with the argument to understand it.
But nobody has given me even a hint of a rational defense for keeping the White House Mormon-free. We have three Mormons in the Senate right now - Gordon Smith (R-Ore.), Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) and Harry Reid (D-Nev. and MoveOn.org) - and democracy survives.

“How does a Republican get elected as Governor in a state whose registered Democratic voters out number their Republican counterparts 3 to one, and the state legislature is 85% liberal?”
Because Lib’s are smart enough not to trust there own state to the more lunatic nut cases in the Dem party.
I think he's alluding to the interview with Jan Mickelson in which case he tried to pack too much into one sentence. Mickelson wants a real president who would crush the constitutional powers of the U.S. Supreme Court AND questioned if he Mitt was a real Mormon for not going along with overturning Marybury v. Madison by ignoring Court rulings.
Mitt Romney got elected in a state whose registered Democrats out number Republicans 3 to 1, because the Democrat he was running against, a vile woman named Shannon 0’Brien , who in debate said she had no problem with girls under 16 years of age getting an abortion without parental consent , or without parental notification. That and the fact O’Brien was “very unbecoming” .
The same way Ronald Reagan won in MASS. in 1980 and 1984
I can't wait to see the replay when Mitt goes up against Hilary. Any Dem is toast against him in a debate.
Yes, but is He one in the same with the Father and Holy Spirit? Me, I wouldn't care what Mitt believes except it factors into my steadfast conviction that most people won't vote for a Mormon (the same as most won't vote Muslim, either) and ensures Hillary if he gets the GOP nod. In fact, IMO, there is more commonality between the founders of Mormonism and Islam that there is with mainline Protestant founders Calvin and Luther, the Roman Catholic Popes and St. Peter, or the Jewish patriarchs, Abraham and Moses. I do, however, believe that Mitt is nothing more than a slicker version of Bill Clinton (without the promiscuity) and that all you have to do is research his Senate campaign against Ted Kennedy to seek out his real true position.
Believe you mean Joseph Smith, the founder of Mormonism. John Smith was the founder of Virginia.
As for Romney, well, to me he's another slickster who got out of military service during a time of national need (and none of his five sons have never stood up for America either). That especially rankles me. I care about his religion only because it ensures the election of Hillary (My religion believes in some pretty weird stuff too, like transubstantiation). Romney, in my book, is warmed over Bill Clinton.
The concept of religion is rather focused for us due to our exposure to the concept of a real tangible super-natural living God or Holy Trinity.
In older cultures objects were deified. Idols, the Sun, rivers and other objects were considered holy or devine. It’s not really that strange for someone to accept nature or the ‘earth spirit’ (as if anyone could believe there is one) as their god.
The left is as unhinged as a fruit loop in my opinion. I gain comfort knowing they thing the same of me.
Leaders of the left don’t give a darn about all this. Exploition of it will further their cause, and that’s all they desire. Marxism baby, now that’s their god.
“. The people that I’ve known who had the greatest drive to convert are atheists.’
Yes, those proselytizing atheists that go door-to-door leaving all their printed jun... wait a minute. That’s the mail man. Never mind.
It seems to me that the people that who are the most insistent, and sometimes the most insulting, are the atheists. Think of Christopher Hitchens, or Dawkins. They are the ones who are not content to have their opinion, and to respectfully leave others to their opinion. Of course, I’m not talking about all atheists, just the more strident. This is my experience both personally and through print and other media. It's a limited sample, but my own.
