BEIRUT, Lebanon - Police have killed the deputy commander of al-Qaida inspired militants entrenched in a Palestinian refugee camp in northern Lebanon, the government said Monday.

Abu Hureira was killed a few days ago by police in the northern port city of Tripoli, near the Nahr el-Bared refugee camp where Fatah Islam militants have been fighting Lebanese soldiers for more than two months, said Information Minister Ghazi Aridi.

"Cabinet was informed by Interior Minister Hassan Sabei that Lebanese security forces have killed the Fatah Islam's No. 2 in the Abu Samra neighborhood" in Tripoli, Aridi told reporters following a Cabinet meeting.

A senior police official said Abu Hureira was one of two men on a motorcycle who opened fire on a police checkpoint in Abu Samra. Police fired back, killing one and wounding the other.

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to give official statements, said the wounded man disclosed during interrogation that his companion was Abu Hureira. He said DNA tests also indicated that Abu Hureira, and his parents provided a positive identification. Police had been waiting for results of the genetic tests to announce the death.

The whereabouts of Abu Hureira, a Lebanese whose real name is Shehab al-Qaddour, had been unknown since fighting at the Nahr el-Bared camp erupted on May 20. Fatah Islam leader Shaker Youssef Absi's whereabouts are still unknown.

The police official said it was not clear how or when Abu Hureira had fled Nahr el-Bared or how long he had been in Tripoli.

The Nahr el-Bared fighting has dragged on and is Lebanon's worst internal violence since the 1975-90 civil war. At least 133 soldiers have been killed, along with an undetermined number of militants — at least 60 — and more than 20 civilians.

The army has refused to halt its offensive until the militants completely surrender, but the gunmen have vowed to fight to the death.

Why the hell aren’t we offering the Lebanese Army tactical air support?

Excellent news. In one of the terrorist chat rooms they were celebrating just 2 days ago that this Fath Al Islam terrorist leader is still alive and well.

They're using helicopters mostly for attack and recon, they done a pretty good job of blowing the heck out of everything with artillery. couldn't be many of them left at this point..

Then by all means, set them up the death.

“Another One Bites the Dust” - Queen

Yes, life is good, and the more of these bastards killed, the sweeter it is.

And don’t forget, our guys are pounding the hell out of Al Qaeda in Iraq, the Madhi Army, and the Taliban. Their losses in high-ranking officials has been tremendous and it continues day-in, day-out (sorry Harry Belacommie).

The untold story is why these camps in Lebanon still exist. Why haven’t the Muslims been assimilated into a Muslim country and been forced to live in deplorable conditions for decades?

They are palestinians.

Arabs are very racist and along with Yemmani’s, Palestinians are at the bottom of the heap.

Saudi Arabia has extremely strict entry requirements mostly to keep the Pali refugees out of the kingdom. They piously give them relief but won’t let them in the Kingdom.
