From the comments: I think this pretty much sums up TNR's position:

"What that statement is saying is “we dont care if Scott Thomas has recanted. We have secret sources that verify what he said is true. but we wont tell you who they are”

Thank you Weekly Standard, an arm of Foxnews, for going after these bozos and proving the error of their (New Republic) ways. The Lame Stream Media loses yet again!

One more question: Is Rather on their (New Republic) staff?

He can’t use section 8 to prove insanity - Catch 22 says so.

Looks like Scottie finally got his "breaking news" thread!

Nice they decided the end of the story was worthy, considering they buried the beginning.

But no, I'm not bitter. ;-)

"And the Soldiers from Beauchamp’s unit should SUE THE HELL OUT OF THE NEW REPUBLIC!!"

'Zactly! Since sedition and treason don't seem to be prosecutable crimes, it may be a way for the Soldiers that he defamed to get the truth out and obtain their pound of flesh.

If you think about it, there are some strange omissions from our threads here lately. I kept waiting for that story about the GAO report on the 200,000 missing weapons. Still nada. I'd post it myself but now I'm curious if it is going to pass as a complete non-event here.

You never appreciate folks like kattracks and John Huang 2 until they stop posting 30-40 threads a day. Or American In Tokyo. I know there were some other heavy serial posters but I recall them most. So thanks for all those stories, guys. Every day, we got a good rounded news diet here because of your efforts.

Well, maybe next time, TomB, your scoop thread will get the billing it deserved.

Do Privates ever get fragged?

If so, perhaps he should get one of these...

Only $279.95 now on sale...plus $150 for the plate insert!

Level IIIA protection!

...but seriously...

Evidently he believes so...

He went to Canada?

I don't think so. I was told so, but I think that people were confusing him with Sommer, who is also under house arrest.

I called the White House comment line operator, my "good" senator and my congressman (as well as Duncan Hunter) today regarding the persecution of the Haditha Marines.

The prosecution of this war should include disciplining the media, censoring the media, prosecuting the media whenever its fifth-column outrages give the enemy aid and comfort.

All personnel who give the enemy aid and comfort--whether it be this scumbag Beauchamp the little-girl-who-would-be-Tokyo-Rose, or the CI (e.g. Conlin) of the Haditha version of the Drake LaCrosse Team Trial--should be made examples of, then marched off in defrocked gear to the Graybar Motel 6.

The enemy should get no rest, no sanctuary and no benefit of micromanaging rules of engagement.

The correct leadership example has not been set by the commander in chief--although his persistence cannot be faulted.

We need Patton now, not Mr. Rogers.

I agree, but....

Kicking a journalist’s ass is like punching a pillow.. Useless.
Going after the employers of these bastards is the ticket..

“Freedom of the Press” has been used as a sword by agenda driven editors, publishers, networks and your run of the mill assholes, instead of a shield for truth tellers as intended..

We are fast approaching the point where the definition of “treason”, “sedition” and “aid and comfort to the enemy” will be tested...

My opinion is that we’ve allowed far too many violations...
Fonda was the precedent setting camel’s nose under the tent..
Kerry followed, under the guidance of Ramsey Clark.
Jimmuh Carter then kicked it up a notch and became the primary paid spokesperson for our enemies.

Now we have Murtha, Reid, Schumer, Pelosi, Kennedy, etc, etc....showing how far the Congress has slipped into the sewer of power seeking worthless sonsuvbitches...

Sooner or later, the Government will have to imprison or hang someone..
If not — I wouldn’t be surprised to see some irate citizen take the law into his own hands........

Yes, there must be political will to crush treason and traitors.

Hank and Erika in Aid and Comfort found enough to indict Fonda in the time frame in which she committed the acts (e.g., radio broadcasts in North Vietnam during the war).

The Nixon people feared the power of Hollywood to counter such action.

In the current environment Reid gives aid and comfort daily, Pelosi travels to Syria in violation of the Logan Act, Murtha makes slanderous accusations, all of it detrimental to the nation's will and the military's morale, all of it giving aid and comfort to the enemy in time of war.

The New York Times and its ilk commit multiple offenses of spreading disinformation--or worse, leaks damaging security.

The fourth estate is a fifth column abusing the first amendment to give aid and comfort.

Legislators and members of the executive branch giving aid and comfort should be publicly arrested.

Bush sets the tone and for his six and a half years it's been the "new tone" of appeasing evil, allowing evil, fearing to even speak the name of evil.

He needs to quit taking his shoes off and roll up his sleeve as in the Uncle Sam poster where he is drawing back his wrench to smite the enemy.

It's not time to be playing subpoena games like children--it's time to open up the Yuri I. Nosenko Suite at the Graybar Motel 6 and get all our little Benedict Arnolds holding the bright yellow rope.

Sing a little song, do a little dance, get life tonight.

Murtha wants to be a Man Without a Country--here's your tray, here's your blanket, we will look upon your disgusting countenance no more, Jack.

Well, I see we’re on the same page!

But I have no illusions.....
I’m a old man now..
Been rode hard and put away wet...
Positioned myself into a happy, very comfortable and enjoyable retirement....

However - I remain angry that I’m not sharing that retirement with the men I loved and respected most in my life..
I’m angry they were denied the opportunity..
I’m angry their service, sacrifices and deaths were slandered and maligned.
I’m angry that those who slandered them are STILL slandering our warriors today, gaining more power and living large on taxpayer's money.
I’m angry the lying bastards have no shame and have suffered NO CONSEQUENCES for their crimes.

I could die at some measure of peace if just a few of the sonsuvbitches were called to task for their crimes...
I have no illusions of that happening in time...

When we called Army spokesman Major Steven F. Lamb and asked about an anonymously sourced allegation that Beauchamp had recanted his articles in a sworn statement, he told us, "I have no knowledge of that."

Read that statement carefully - NR is suggesting that Lamb has no knowledge of the recantation - but look - that is *not* what Lamb said at all - Lamb is talking about the "anonymous source" - he does not know who the anonymous source is.

He is *not* denying that Beauchamp recanted.

Oh, God, what a slimy bunch of weasels at the NR! Busted!

Did Beauchamp's wife (Ellie Reeve, researcher-reporter at The New Republic) know he was lying, or not?

Well, now NR subscriptions are going to go in the toilet.

Like CBS - it's got nothing to do with the fact they have been completely discredited.

Instead, it's because "America isn't ready for a women researcher-reporter."
