Fred Thompson: Criticism of My Wife Should Be Directed at Me She did what I asked her to do, the presidential candidate-in-waiting tells NRO.
By Byron York
Over the course of former Sen. Fred Thompsons testing the waters exploratory campaign, there have been reports suggesting that his wife, Jeri, has played a big role perhaps too big a role in the effort. Some observers, mostly anonymous, have pointed to disputes involving Jeri Thompson as the reason for the recent shakeup in the Thompson staff that led to the departures of top aide Tom Collamore and a few others. An article in yesterdays Washington Post called Jeri Thompson a driving and at times divisive force within the presidential campaign her husband is preparing to launch. Going beyond the nascent campaign, the Post also delved into Mrs. Thompsons romantic history, as well as her finances going back nearly 20 years.
Through it all, Fred Thompson has remained silent. But this morning, I interviewed Thompson for a profile to be published in the next issue of NR, and I asked him to comment on the stories about his wife.
She has taken a lot of comments that should have been directed toward me, Thompson told me. When he started looking into running for president, Thompson said, there was a lot to be done and very little time to do it, and his wife played a key role in getting things going. We started literally from the kitchen table a few months ago, he said.

If she wants to be beloved, she must copy Laura Bush.
“..the Post also delved into Mrs. Thompsons romantic history, as well as her finances going back nearly 20 years. “
Funny. I don’t remembe the Washington Com-Post “delving” into the “romantic” history of the great stain-maker!!!
More Dem newspapers campaiging in advance against Republicans.
Careful, Ed*. Uh, Fred.

*Ed Muskie shed tears over the treatment of his wife, and it cost him the election.

Mrs. Breck Girl: "Criticism of My 'Husband' Should Be Directed at Me..."
Criticism of My Wife Should Be Directed at Me and Then We Can Take It Out Back.
You mean sit back and support her man by looking like the humble wife and not doing anything to help?
Gimme a break! Jeri has connections inside the beltway and among the RNC that Fred will need to be successful, IT'S WHAT SHE DID BEFORE SHE MARRIED FRED.
Her abilities and knowledge will be vital to a successful campaign. she knows the politics, she knows she will be involved in a lot of sniping. She will be a great asset to FDT during the run to the White House.
Her priority is getting Fred to the White House. For that she is going to do what is necessary, even shaking up the staff to get it done.
Or why not just be herself, a smart attractive loving wife and mother who can do whatever it takes to help her husband.
"Liz won't let anyone be mean to me. "
Im willing to guess that when she writes her name Jeri (as opposed to Jerry) she puts a circle above the i rather than a dot.
Yeck!!!
I, for one, love it when the spouse of an politician gets involved. We either find out how wonderful and talented she/he is, or how much of a hildebeast they are.
Jeri is a remarkably intelligent and capable person, regardless of gender, it would be such a shame to force those qualities into the shadows...then we all lose.
The despicable democrat party mass media, sub-human cowards that they are, have been launching vile character assassination on the wives of Republican candidates (Fred and Rudy).
At the same time, sugary puff articles are issued on the spouses of democrats.
If you can prove this then Fred's candidacy is finished!
If Thompson wins, his wife will be as accomplished as any other political operative you can name.
And nobody will question her political judgement for four years, maybe more.
In the mean time, I’d rather think about Jeri than any of the other candidate’s wives....for the obvious reason.
She’s got a purty mind, doncha know?
Then she won’t be beloved.
So it’s your contention that a candidates wife, who has a working knowledge of the in’s and out’s of political campaigning, should stand on the sideline and watch?
I’m saying that she will not be beloved by the American people like Laura is. It’s just a fact.
The press never covered Bill Clinton’s old girl friends or his current girl friends.
