The Dumbest Move the Dems Could Make [Impeachment] (Barf Alert!)
The Washington Post ^ | August 5, 2007 | Michael Tomasky

"Impeach or else!"

That was the headline that one liberal Web site ran over a recent interview with the antiwar activist Cindy Sheehan, who has been demanding that President Bush and Vice President Cheney be chucked out of office. But the Bush administration isn't her only target. Sheehan is so frustrated with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi -- who declared impeachment "off the table" even before the Democrats took control of Congress -- that she is threatening to run against her.

The speaker may think impeachment is off the table, but the I-word is being tossed about pretty freely in some left-leaning circles these days. The idea was first mentioned by a hardy band of Bush foes as long ago as the immediate aftermath of the 2000 Florida recount. Today, my e-mail inbox bubbles with notices of fresh and scandalous counts just waiting to be added to the bill of indictment.

Even a few Republicans have bruited about the idea. Sen. Chuck Hagel (Neb.), speaking to Esquire magazine about Bush's hostility toward democratic accountability, said that "before this is over, you might see calls for his impeachment." Bruce Fein, a Reagan administration veteran and conservative legal scholar, has aimed his gunsight at Cheney, producing a scathing denunciation in Slate of the vice president's high crimes and misdemeanors -- even describing one, the indefinite detention of U.S. citizens, as "indistinguishable from Louis XVI's execrated lettres de cachet that occasioned the storming of the Bastille." Mon Dieu!

He's a liberal arguing against impeachment since it would boomerang on the Democrats with middle of the road voters. It would make every event highly political and make the Democrats seem overly partisan. Can a party with a 3% approval rating win the trust of the American people for beginning impeachment proceedings against the President and Vice President? That's exactly the last thing Congressional Democrats want to do - as when their kook base insists they commit political suicide just to satisfy an emotional need to avenge themselves upon a hated Administration.

If something can be found that Congress itself has not been complicit in, yes, try it, by all means.

This just shows that America and Her people come second to the Democrats. Political posturing for votes is first and foremost to them.

If they seriously felt that Bush had committed an Impeachable Offense and had the evidence, there would be no hesitation in bringing the charges now that they are in control.

It is all about their own “surge” in their continuing 2006 campaign.

"And they still want pay back for impeaching Clinton."

You got that right, but unlike Clinton, Bush has done nothing wrong except win two elections. They are driven by hatred and that alone will be their undoing.

“And they still want pay back for impeaching Clinton.”

That’s exactly what it’s about. The Democrats gave us Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton, two losers, which they can’t quite live down. Now, they want us to accept another loser, Hillary.

No thanks.

I agree, I think they should try. The results could hardly be any worse than their current direction. It'd be like a constant endorsement of a Republican House and Senate right through to November 2008.

“Bush has done nothing wrong except win two elections”

Bush has been a big spending, big government liberal. He trows money away faster than Clinton could dream of.

I’m for impeachment on that basis.

I don’t know why the liberals don’t like him, he’s given them everything they want except a few SCOTUS choices.

He's the symbol of their loss of power. It really has nothing at all to do with his policies, especially the ones you cite.
