ASHLAND Mississippi-- Four people, including a candidate for Benton County sheriff, were arrested Friday and charged with voter fraud - just five days before Tuesday's primary election.

The arrest Friday of Democratic candidate Clint Moffett and the others by investigators for the attorney general's office brings the number to seven arrested in a probe of vote selling.

Attorney General Jim Hood said the investigation began a month ago, but would not provide details.

"Let this be a warning to those in other counties who would corrupt our voting process," Hood said. "We will come after you."

David Massey, 40, of Hickory Flat, his brother, Tip Massey, 42, of New Albany, and Maurice Warren were also arrested and were being held at the Tippah County jail.

Investigators arrested Lillie Jean Norton, 59, James Bullock, 41, and Ada Tucker, 50, earlier this week. All are from Ashland and face a charge of conspiracy to commit voter fraud. Bullock also has been charged with bribery.

Bonds for Norton and Tucker were set at $20,000. Bullock's bond was $40,000.

An initial court appearance for Norton and Tucker was scheduled for Monday. Bullock's court appearance in August 27.

At least one candidate, John Helmert, said he's worried now that the election will be fair, according to an article in the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal.

Helmert, a Republican from Abbeville, is seeking to unseat Democrat Jack Gadd of Hickory Flat in the District 13 House race. Neither he nor Gadd has primary opposition in Tuesday's election.

Hi, WKB. It's been a long time since I've posted -- been very busy, moved to a new house. Went to vote this morning, and the computer showed my Republican primary ballot, but printed a democrat ballot, marked with votes. They shut the machine down and let me vote again on another machine.

Where's Onyx?

I suppose that the sentence would read better if it reflected the following: “At least one candidate, John Helmert, said he’s worried now about whether the election will be fair.”

I have been a staunch proponent of fair elections, including photographic identification. I believe, at a minimum, that every voter should be alive, registered to vote, and physically present when casting a vote.

Although probably not a misquote, (I didn’t record the conversation I had with the reporter and she is a very good reporter), this did not convey my dissatisfaction with the present electoral system in Mississippi.

I am very concerned about whether elections are fair in Mississippi and especially in the 13th House District. Especially now that 13 have been arrested, with more to come, supposedly.

I am extremely suspicious of the media. They could report my mother loves me and I'd have to fact check it. That's why when I read were you said you were "worried now that the election will be fair..." the first thing I thought was the reporter was trying to raise the level of suspicions of your candidacy. I've read some terrible hit pieces on republicans and just assumed it was business as usual for the press this time as well. Welcome, by the way, to freerepublic. I noticed you joined up today (FYI, if you hold your mouse cursor over a persons name it will tell you how long they've been a member.) I know you will enjoy the sight.

Thank you for your welcome. The reporter in question is one of the best. I’ve known her for years, and she has always been fair. If I said it the way she printed it, I’m certain there was some inflection that didn’t get conveyed in print.

I understand. Oh, and congratulation on your election.

That’s amazing—someone actually mentioned they were ‘Rats before the end paragraph. This will not stand—the writer will be looking for a new job come Monday.
