Confession of a Recovering Democrat

I grew up in a home in which Franklin Roosevelt was regarded as a saint. Is it any wonder that it took me so many years before I finally saw the light? As a rule, I don’t approve of people who lay their own shortcomings at the feet of their parents, but when I realize that for no other reason than the way I was raised that I actually voted for Jimmy Carter, it’s awfully tempting to blame my folks.

But whoever is at fault, it is certainly high time to acknowledge how much harm was done to this country during FDR’s administrations, and how much spin left-wing historians have put on his record . For instance, he has often been credited with keeping America from going Communist during the Great Depression. But you might say the same about the leaders of Germany, Italy and Spain.

The fact is, Roosevelt simply introduced an American form of Communism, one the country was willing to swallow. There were no gulags or show trials; instead, there was an alphabet soup of new federal departments and bureaucracies, whose sole purpose was to diminish the power of the states and its citizens. FDR tried and pretty much succeeded in turning the federal government into a grotesque, power-crazy, creature that was all mouth and no brain. Compared to Roosevelt, Dr. Frankenstein was small potatoes.

The best line of the story was when the author indicated the prolonging of the Depression—thanks FDR, you son-of-a b*tch.

I wasn't alive when Carter was selected not elected, but in all seriousness, what possible line of reasoning could have lead someone to think that this legume growing dope from Georgia should be President?

LOL @ “legume-growing dope”. I wasn’t voting age, but I remember that he got somewhat of a pass amongst some southerners, simply for being southern. Sad and simple-minded, but true. They learned their mistake, and then arose “the solid south”-for the GOP, LOL. That’s it in a tiny tiny nutshell :)

It was a lot harder to get reliable information about politics back then.

Jimmy Carter was elected because the American public was angry with Gerald Ford because President Ford pardoned Richard Nixon. The line of reasoning was that an unknown governor of a small southern state was a better choice than the guy who pardoned Nixon. The good news is that this turn of events lead to the election of Ronald Reagan in 1980.

Similar story. I voted for Carter. My mom was an ACLU member, although my Dad was a stauch Goldwater supporter. I finally figured out in college that socialism/communism was horrible (although many others thought of it as the Pantheon).

FDR should burn for what he did. And that mega Communist Henry Wallace. We need a new Reagan to defealt Hillary who is FDR without a Y chromosone. Hell, even Slick Willy was a better President that Hillary will be.

If she gets in, beware the coming dark ages. They will trash the economy and deny freedoms on an epic level. We have to find the new Reagan to bring us back from the abyss.

“...what possible line of reasoning could have lead someone to think that this legume growing dope from Georgia should be President?”

The Dems had veto-proof majorities in both houses of Congress after the 1974 elections, thus badly hamstringing President Ford (it’s the only reason a Republican President would nominate someone like John Paul Stevens for the SCOTUS).

And, yes, it’s not a coincidence that the last two Dem Presidents were Southern governors - the ONLY chance the Dems have in Pres elections now is to nominate Southerners.
Partly because of President Ford’s resulting ineffectiveness, anyone running for President in ‘76 as a Democrat was going to be elected - even Jimmuh, even though a few hundred votes in Texas, Oregon and Hawaii would have made the difference.

” what possible line of reasoning could have lead someone to think that this legume growing dope from Georgia should be President? “

I guess you had to have been there — it seemed like a good idea at the time... Oops....

What I can’t understand is how a pretty fair majority of us thought that a skirt-chasing, non-inhaling governor from Arkansas would make a good president — twice.....

The closest we have this time is Fred Thompson. Say what you will, but Duncan Hunter is going nowhere in the polls, Mitt and Rudy are too liberal, and McCain is toast!

I’ll confess, I was a filthy long haired hippie. I voted for George McGovern. I voted for Peanut Man Carter. Then I got married, had three children, started a construction business and switched to vote for the Great Ronnie Reagan.

OK, who has misplaced the Vast Right-Wing Conspiracy membership cards?

This guy has earned one.

:-)

Oh, yeah, and who has the key to the lockbox with the Social Security trust fund in it?

The guy should get one of those as well.

:-)

At the time it was all a lot of people could do to tollerate Gerald Ford being appointed by Nixon, then becoming the President. Ford was rather lackluster, but his worst trait was his lack of charisma and his poor campaign style.

Carter like Clinton was basicly an unknown until a year or so before the election. These two southern governors from very small states should have been deemed unqualified to lead in any real sense, based on their experience.

Clinton’s state stood at 48th to 50th in just about every measurement of standing. Name a category and it was embarassing. Of course the media avoided any negative reporting on them during the campaign season. Even if they did go after them for a few days, they’d always lay a big fat juicy french kiss on them to make up for it.

Clinton was all but washed up around march of 1992. His affairs hit the spotlight and he was down for about a nine count. Then Carson, the Today Show and Sixty-Minutes put him on life support. It was ugly watching them blow this empty suit up to bigger than life size.

Yes, the ‘most intelligent’ president we’ve seen since John F. couldn’t even keep his zipper up. Eh, who cares. After all, he had that leadership record... LMAO

Carter’s big promise was that he was going to run a very humanitarian presidency. He wasn’t going to play footsie with despots around the world.

Sure enough, he cut ties with the Shah of Iran and destablized the middle east for the next 30 plus years. We’re still trying to get back to the place Carter took over when he came to office. Of course nobody reports it out, but the Iranian people were far worse off under the Ayatollahs.

Women in Iran took a thirty year backstep as soon as the Islamic leadership came to power. Thanks Jimma. You da man... or was that woman...

I remember the time. It was revulsion and disgust over Nixon. Someone could have run Pinky Lee or Mister Ed against a Republican and won.

The Hero Press saved the world with Watergate revelations, and The Nix had a bad personality.

The very campaign of Carter was hokey and Plain Folks to contrast him with the slick, smarmy Used Car Dealer image of The Nix.

Now, a generation later we learn what a vicious bag of treasonous bitter venom this POS really is. We only thought Carter was an idiot, then.

Now "tell the truth and shame the devil", as the country folk say; WJC got a plurality both times (the first time about 43%! and the second time was still below 50%).

This exposes the other secret shame lurking in our membership; who here will admit to voting for Perot because Bush-41 broke the "no new taxes" pledge?

(Not I. I was angry, but not that angry.)

” (Not I. I was angry, but not that angry.) “

Nor I — I did, however, sit-out the ‘96 election because I refused to vote for the hapless Bob Dole, who was an admitted ‘throw-away’ candidate, nominated in a conceded election because ‘it was his turn’.......

Sue me.....
