Vick dogfighting case opens up racial divide
MSNBC ^ | 8/3/2007 | A/P

RICHMOND, Va. - The difference between those sporting Michael Vick jerseys and those urging his swift conviction on dogfighting charges is glaring: Vick’s supporters are mostly black; his critics are mostly white.

The racial divide emerged early in the case against the Atlanta Falcons quarterback, apparent at rallies filled with cheering — and overwhelmingly black — Vick supporters and at anti-Vick protests that are noticeably white.

Vick’s opponents say the evidence against him is overwhelming. For many black supporters, that judgment evokes uncomfortable questions about race and guilt in America.

“White folks 'been grindin’ on an ax ... and that ax ain’t got sharp enough for them,” said Earnest Hardy Sr., who called the case a witch hunt targeting a successful black man.

NAACP and other blacks’ support for Vick will promote, rightly or wrongly, a bad stereotype of blacks and only harm future race relations. This case had nothing to do with race, it did deal with horrific sadism against helpless animals. How stupid to make it into a racial issue and leave an impression that dog fighting is okay.

Do these people believe that “whitey” would be OK with Peyton Manning having (allegedly)done these kinds of things?

There was a picture of a dog who had been used in dog fights on one of these Vick’s threads. All that has to be done is to have that picture shown and all this race crap will stop. Nobody could look at that and remain unmoved.

Dog fighting is evil, but why are we not hearing of others being prosecuted if the activity is so widespread?

I know Vick is a public figure and newsworthy, but there muxt be a lot of others involved in doing the same thing, assuming he is guilty.

"Race has nothing to do with it."

I didn't even know Vick is a black guy until the usual suspects became involved. Since dogfighting started in Rome a few thousand years ago maybe he's "acting white". Placing bets and side bets on lower animals is immoral. Just as cock-fighting is in S.A. Leave the animals alone and get into the ring yourself to make money like a man.

Just because people are upset about the brutal killing of an animal, doesn’t mean they wouldn’t be equally or more outrages at a homicide.

Strawman much?

i never strawman, it’s quite plain that dogfighting causes more outrage both in our culture and arguably here on FR than does abortion and other cultural degeneration far more widespread and telling than a few rednecks and thuggas fighting dogs.

strawman would be to be trying to justify dog fighting thru tangential examples of rationalization, I’m not doing that. i’m lamenting our lopsided concerns...and I think it’s a valid commentary

i’m off to Rosemary Beach ....for an end of summer mini-vac ...out the door.

have a good weekend

wkb...don’t get lonely with both of us MIA

“I find it disturbing that so many folks get more upset over dog killing than other killings that to me are more serious.”

The reason this case is getting so much attention is that Vick is a high profile figure. Were he to have killed folks, he would be getting even more attention.

The next door neighbor to Michael Vick’s property in Surry County is Pastor Earnest Hardy Sr. Two weeks after the April 25th search of Vick’s home for alleged dog fighting, Vick decided to sell his home.

At that time, Hardy called a Vick associate at the house, expressing interest in buying the property.

“Pernell said the place is appraised at $450,000, but he’ll take 300 for it, because he wanted to move it quick,” explained Hardy.

Hardy thought it was a done deal, so he went to the house and took down the “For Sale” sign.

The next day, the sign was back up. The house was worth a lot more than Vick initially thought and a higher offer had come in.

Hardy believed he would be buying the property, even though it was only a verbal agreement.

“The only thing I expect a man to do is honor his word. I ain’t got no written contract. We agreed on the phone,” said Hardy.

SURRY - The neighbor to Michael Vick’s Surry County property never suspected dogfighting next door.

“I think somebody’s blowing smoke,” Earnest R. Hardy Sr. said. “I live closer to him than anybody. I lived here longer than anybody. The scale and the magnitude they’re talking about, I don’t see it. They’re running on a half a tank of assumptions.”

“I’m never at the house,’’ Vick said, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “I left the house with my family members and my cousin. They just haven’t been doing the right thing. It’s unfortunate I have to take the heat.”

Hardy said he has seen dog food delivered by the truckload.

And he has seen the treadmills and injections, what he believed were nutritional supplements, he said.

“I’m not saying it’s not happening,” he said. “I just don’t see it.”

“The worst thing that’s happened on this road since Michael Vick’s been on this road is the crowd of people coming out here because somebody is trying to prove him guilty of fighting dogs out here,” said Earnest Hardy Sr.

I think part of this is “a southern thing” and not just a racial thing. If I remember history, lots of blood sports were popular in the old south, including dueling with swords and pistols.

"Vick dogfighting case opens up racial divide>"

Bull Squat....
The "racial divide" has ALWAYS been there for blacks...

Surely I don't need to name examples......
Nor should I need to remind of voting patterns...

Does anyone believe whites could have relied upon America's blacks to implement Civil Rights, Equal rights, welfare or Affirmative Action for whites if whites were in the disadvantaged minority?

"Why in the world would white Atlanta - mostly all Falcons fans - want Michael Vick to be convicted and out of football for a few years, if not forever?"

Have you ever considered that perhaps they believe him to be GUILTY, and deserving of a punishment equal to the crime?

Duh!

Precisely, but not because of the commonly accepted wisdom running through black Atlanta: that Micheal Vick is a victim of a white conspiracy hatched because white people can’t stand to see a black get so “big” and make so much money>

I don’t see anything particularly astute about my comments, but I will add the following:

If I ever get rich, I would hire a bunch of lawyers, financial advisors and bodyguards, to protect me from my family and friends...and strangers.

And I would listen to them.....

What ?....... did he only kill and abuse white dogs ?

NO .........he’s just one more friggin suspect playing the race card. Which IMHO previews his guilt in a right fine manner.

His actions and his handlers speak loudly......

Doom on those who play the race card on either side. Criminals are criminals.

Give em a fair trial .......that’ll show em !
