WASHINGTON - President Bush said Friday that Congress must stay in session until it approves legislation modernizing a U.S. law governing eavesdropping on foreigners.

“So far the Democrats in Congress have not drafted a bill I can sign,” Bush said at FBI headquarters, where he was meeting with counterterror and homeland security officials. “We’ve worked hard and in good faith with the Democrats to find a solution, but we are not going to put our national security at risk. Time is short.”

The president, who has the power under the Constitution to keep Congress in session, said lawmakers cannot leave for their August recess this weekend as planned unless they “pass a bill that will give our intelligence community the tools they need to protect the United States.”

Nothing would make Nancy and Harry madder than to be detained from their August vacation. The President isn't leaving for Texas either - he's serious about getting the job done.

“The president, who has the power under the Constitution to keep Congress in session”

Keep them there through every holiday just to make them actually work instead of them just claiming they’re working. Now would be a good time for Social Security reform.

..pass a bill that will give our intelligence community the tools it needs to protect the United States of America...

Is it a coincidence the House tried to ram through a bill that would have given millions/billions of OUR hard earned dollars to illegal citizens last night.

Is that really why you want them to stay put....get the job done.

Also, why not erect the already paid for fence for us citizens.....of the United States of America.

Also, why not enforce the laws already on the books for us....the United States citizens.

Just asking....

I’m more worried about what the bill will do to our civil liberties... I’d prefer he leave us alone & respect our privacy.

Quotes about adjournment in constitution:
he may, on extraordinary Occasions, convene both Houses, or either of them, and in Case of Disagreement between them, with Respect to the Time of Adjournment, he may adjourn them to such Time as he shall think proper

So he can force either one of them into session, or both. And if one wants to adjourn, and the other doesn't, he can force an adjournment as well. That becomes active based on this from legislative section:

Neither House, during the Session of Congress, shall, without the Consent of the other, adjourn for more than three days, nor to any other Place than that in which the two Houses shall be sitting.

So the house or senate can force the other to stay around, but the President could then override that and send them all home. But he can, alone, order them to stay.

LOL I can just see them now - stomping their feet and calling the President every name in the book because they can’t have their wittle vacation. Lazy, arrogant, coddled, egotistical little leftist weenies!

You obviously haven’t kept up with what the actual dispute is about. A court ruled that the NSA can’t listen to two terrorist, both overseas, if the communication runs through any router or switch inside the US. If this ruling was allowed to stand without a change to the FISA law then almost all intercepts of terrorist communications would cease because the US has over 80% of the world’s communication switches, servers, relays, trunk lines, etc, on our home soil. In other words, almost every communication worldwide hits the US soil at some point.

You obviously don’t see that this issue is bigger than stopping terrorists.

I understand your very strong point...

..but if what happened last night in the House is allowed to stand...

..these 'points' will be moot in light of the anarchy that follows.

Please explain what is bigger than stopping terrorists. If anyone is talking to a terrorist, the gov’t has the responsibility to find out what the terrorist is saying. The government doesn’t care to listen to you talk to your second cousin Germany or even Egypt or Jordan, unless your second cousin is a known terrorist.

That’s a good time to turn on CSPAN and get the popcorn. I want to see President Bush actually lock the chamber doors.

No it’s not. The NSA program had been going on for 4 years now before this judge intervened and there has not been one successful challenge to the program by anyone with standing. There has been rulings by judges in favor of complainants but none has stood beyond appeal.
