Traveling with a group of infantrymen, the reporter was killed by a sniper's machine-gun bullets. Saddened by their loss, the soldiers paid tribute to their fallen friend with a simple plaque reading: "At this spot, the 77th Infantry Division lost a Buddy, Ernie Pyle, 18 April 1945."

You share a birthday with my Sister-in-law. We gave her a surprise party last night... hubby took her out all afternoon on a motorcycle ride, so the kids and I hit the dollar store, baked a Spice cake, and made her favorite meal, which is steak fajitas. It made me grin to realize that two such fun and gutsy gals share the same birthday! I hope yours is AWESOME!!

Thank you. :-) We're having our regular Friday grill-out this evening and these guys are up to no good. I've seen far to much whispering and have walked in twice on conversations that have somewhat guiltily broken up very quickly.

I warned them, "You guys had better not be pulling anything."

But they never listen. LOL

Thanks Kathy!!!

It looks really great. Thanks for all your hard work.

Pyle is a sort of hero of mine, and I have read all his stuff and many books about him.

If you get a chance, read Pyle’s “Brave Men”. Brilliant in it’s simplicity, yet Pyle had a way of making you feel you were seeing war through his eyes. His style of writing was not rare for it’s time, yet very little today comes even close.

GI’s loved Pyle, and he loved the GI’s. He went out of his way to name them in his articles and list their home towns. He lived with them and went to the front with them, he ate what they ate and slept in the mud and the desert and the forests with them.

WWII was covered by many newspapermen and women, many were good and some died in the pursuit. Some famous women wrote about the war and there is a book called “The Women Who Wrote the War” which is worth the read.

While many people wrote about the war, there was only one Ernie Pyle.

Regards,
AR

You are welcome Allegra.

I guess the 73º here, along with 90% humidity, is nothing to complain about today.

Stay safe and as cool as possible.
