A Special Counsel for Spitzer
WSJ ^ | August 2, 2007 | JOSEPH L. BRUNO

Posted on 08/02/2007 5:26:48 AM PDT by Brilliant

New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer is now traveling the state trying to put a scandal behind him...

Here's what we know, thanks to some enterprising reporting ...and an investigation by New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo: Two close advisers to the governor apparently used the New York State Police to carry out a political smear campaign against me by creating documents designed to generate negative press reports... And it nearly worked.

...there is only one way forward for Mr. Spitzer. He needs to support a full airing of the truth. That support must include publicly testifying under oath, and making advisers available to publicly testify under oath, as part of an independent investigation...

The abuse of power now being alleged is a very serious... It is especially damaging because the scandal involves misusing state troopers and alleged misconduct by the governor's top aides... New Yorkers have made it clear ...that they believe the governor knew about the smear campaign and should publicly testify about what he knew and when he knew it.

It is troubling that a governor who campaigned on ethics, openness and accountability, is now trying to sweep the "Troopergate" matter under the rug. But it is not surprising... It is just the most serious example of a pattern of behavior...

When Mr. Spitzer took office ...the Republican Senate majority ...pledged to work with him on critical issues... But we quickly found that we did not have a willing partner. We found a man who did not respect opposing viewpoints and who verbally threatened those who disagreed...

...the governor has refused to work in a bipartisan manner. Instead, he has politicized his office like no other governor in history. Rather than negotiating and compromising with people who challenged him, Mr. Spitzer tried to eliminate them...

What did Spitzer know, and when did he know it?

There is no way that Spitzer was not shepherding this entire scheme from conception to execution to coverup.

He is an absolute control freak.

I’m sure when the ethics board, that’s mostly appointed by him, reviews this it will be all cleared up.

I agree.
How serious are the voters taking this in New York?
Do they think this will blow over and the governor will survive?

Takes a crook to catch one.

How many has he screwed, and how hard?
(My guess is about 19 million NY’ers)

ooops.... I guess Bubba’s advice on how to be a Governor didn’t work in New York like it did in Arkansas.

At his core, Spitzer is a fascist goon who will destroy anyone to advance his power-lust.

Huh? They're NY voters. Doesn't matter what he's done, whether they like him or not: they'll vote for him. PA voters are running a close second with Fast Eddie.

The truth is that what Spitzer did is done by every Democrat. Spitzer is just less subtle, and therefore got caught.

My guess is since it’s a DEM in New York it will go away rather quickly. I hope I’m wrong!

This is Andrew Cuomo’s ticket to the Governor’s mansion—and he knows it.

Yep, Spitzer knew and probably planned it. He's an "f-in steamroller" afterall and will "roll over anyone" who gets in his way. I live in central NY and worked for the State for 23 years. I saw people lose their jobs or be disciplined over less serious behavior than what Spitzer and his henchmen engaged in.

Glaringly absent in all this is the role played by Acting Superintendent Preston Felton of the State Police. This guy was appointed as Acting Supt. by Spitzer, and was more than likely in line to become the first black Superintendent of State Police. Attorney General Cuomo recommended Felton be disciplined along with the three aides from Spitzer's office, but Spitzer said he would not discipline Felton for his actions. My question is why is Spitzer protecting Felton? Is it because he's black? Is it because he was lied to by Spitzer's office to gain his assistance in spying on Bruno? Is it because he knows too much and Spitzer needs him as an ally? The only way to find out the real deal is to have a Special Counsel appointed to investigate the scandal in depth. I am sick and tired of State officials getting away with persistent ethics violations while peon employees are prosecuted to the hilt by the State's disciplinary system.

He is like a combination of Bill and Hill in one scary person: smart, ruthless, holier than thou, self-possessed AND a liar.

It's not the first time spitzer has sent his thugs out to do the dirty work

He actually threatened to use all the power of his office against Sean Hannity once. Luckily Seans producer had the comment on tape and Spitzer backtracked saying he did not mean it the way it sounded.

There is a thread of it on FR, when it happen.

More seriously than they usually do. I don't know if that's enough.

Spitzer is a moron - all he had to do was wait for the midterm elections in which he stood an excellent chance of securing a Democrat majority in the NY Senate. But, as usual, he jumped the gun.

This isn't unique to Spitzer - it's the democRAT's modus operandus. They use the left-wing printed media to smear those that don't agree with them, while simultaneously trying to silence dissenters.

If Spritzer is trying to use the State Police to aid in defeating his dissenters, then he needs to be impeached and those in the highway patrol that assisted him need to be fired and prosecuted.

Oh, and about that $5 million “loan” to his campaign.... ????
