I believe the MNDOT Administrator may catch some hard times over this. The FBI and Homeland Security is on scene. If it is from stress, that should have been caught, he is toast. If it is from stress that could have not been caught, he will barely make it. If it’s terrorism then it’s a different ballgame.

TOKYO - A strong quake hit near Sakhalin island in Russia’s Far East, reportedly killing one person and triggering small tsunami waves.

The temblor, with a preliminary magnitude of 6.4, struck at 11:38 a.m. (10:38 p.m. EDT) near southern Sakhalin, according to Japan’s Meteorological Agency. One person was killed, the Russian news service Interfax reported.

Tsunami waves of about 8 inches hit the coastal town of Rumoi on Japan’s northernmost island of Hokkaido shortly after 1 p.m., the agency said.

Waves up to 20 inches could hit elsewhere on Hokkaido’s western coast, the agency warned.

What we worry over most are shocks from the Aleutians and from South America. There aren't any early warning islands in between.

Japan gets a lot of locally generated seismic sea waves from island to island or just a back wash from one in the vicinity.

No...doesn’t have anything to do with the bridge. The bridge dropped due to an imbalance in the structure ‘cause of the construction taking place [heavy in various areas including lots of 5 o’clock traffic not moving at all]. That was a ticket for disaster.

This is strange. We use the Alaska Earthquake Information Center every day to see if there’s been any new quakes and I just pulled up their website and they are not showing a quake of this magnitude.

The temblor, with a preliminary magnitude of 6.4, struck at 11:38 a.m. Japan time (10:30 p.m. EDT) and hit the southern tip of Sakhalin, just north of Japan, according to Japan’s Meteorological Agency.

One person died and two people were injured on Sakhalin from the quake, the Russian news service Interfax reported.

In Japan, tsunami waves of about 1 foot hit the coastal city of Wakkanai on the country’s northernmost island of Hokkaido shortly before 2 p.m., according to the Meteorological Agency. Smaller waves were recorded elsewhere along Hokkaido’s western coast.

A second quake of magnitude 5.9 struck the region at 2:22 p.m., the agency said, but said there was no danger of a tsunami.

There were no reports of injuries or damage in Japan from the quakes or tsunami waves. Authorities lifted a tsunami warning for western Hokkaido three hours after the first quake.

Japan and Russia’s Far Eastern provinces form part of the Pacific Ocean’s seismically active “Ring of Fire.”

The Japanese government issues tsunami warnings even when only tiny waves are expected, and the country’s most heavily populated coastlines are fitted with loudspeakers to order tsunami evacuations.
