BOSTON --With a big month in Iowa looming, Republican Mitt Romney is airing a commercial focused on one of the state's hot-button issues: immigration.
Five days before the latest GOP presidential debate, and 11 days before the state's straw poll, Romney trimmed a May television ad into a 30-second spot in which he reiterates his support for legal immigration, but opposition to illegal immigration.
"We should put in place an employment verification system," Romney tells an audience member in a scene from one of his "Ask Mitt Anything" town hall meetings. "And then, when an employer is thinking of hiring someone, the federal database immediately tells them whether they're available to be working or not. If they're not, you can't hire them."

I think that immigration has peaked as an issue. I saw a story on FoxNews yesterday in which they were saying that the illegal crossovers from Mexico are way down. Maybe that’s why Bush’s poll numbers are going up.
I saw that too. Well, what do you know? Building a fence works! Who would’a thunk it?
Bush is also enjoying a bounce from the surge in Iraq. Americans like winners and they will not tolerate a loser. (From the movie)
What is his opinion on the fence? Additionally, what does Romney plan to do re: the 20+ million illegals currently in the country? The answers to these two questions will demonstrate how serious Romney is about stopping the ilegal invasion.
That is what is so effective about making it dangerous to hire illegals. If there are no jobs, there is no money.
Dangerous thinking. The issue is alive and well, but the battle is going to the courts instead of the legislature.
Romney and Hunter are the only candidates with the courage to side with the majority of Americans.
They would make a good team.
How will you control the boarders?
Mitt you said, illegals with have to get in line with everyone else. Is that not rewarding law breakers?
Why would you not deport the illegals?
You said, an employment verification system, where a new card is issued for those who do not have a valid SSN, the potential employer would access a database to verify the applicant is legal to hire. What will drive those without a valid SSN to apply for the new card?
What controls are in the new verification system which insures the employer would even access the database?
How long will it take to establish this system, how much will it cost? What happens to the illegals between the time the new system is law and it goes into affect?
If I present a SS card to a potential employer, what will require him to verify my SSN which from your description is not in the NEW system database.
My point to you Mitt fans, these words are on Mitt’s dream sheet. He does not even state how he will “control the boarders”
All show no go...Mitt
I guess someone told him his 30 second video did not cover this part of his plan
It’s funny. I’ve been saying for months that my top 3 picks are Hunter, Fred, and Romney. I’ve been frustrated that Hunter gets so little media attention. But I’ve never considered the possibility that Romney and Hunter might join together. I think that would provide a lot of benefits.
A Conservative and a RINO team, don’t think so.
In other words, Mitt’s solution is that instead of building a fence and enforcing existing immigration laws, that we should come up with yet another federal project to solve a problem that the feds created in the first place.
Agreed. But until it is back, the issue will be on the slow burner. That’s what the Dems and pro-immigration groups are hoping.
To me it is like two leaks in a hose, close one and more comes through the second.
Exactly what I was going to say. Those guys are barely literate.
