Chicago came perilously close to becoming the Detroit model in the ‘80s when it elected Harold Washington. Problem with the Chicago model is that it has a White Democrat dictator who is the son of another dictator and no two-party system. Detroit has had a Republican Mayor more recently than Chicago.

“driven through downtown Detriot”
Don’t stop at red lights in certain areas. Best thing is to get a ticket, sometimes.

My only expose to Detroit, while on an escorted bus trip to Niagara Falls, was spending one night in Canada across the river from Detroit and listening to the Detroit metro screech around curves all night. Couldn’t see any passengers and didn’t go look as we had been advised to not go there. The next morning we drove right through Detroit and I found it hard to believe such a mess could even exist in the USA. Burned out buildings and cars, it was absolutely disgraceful.

do they still have the high rise buildings ‘board up’ for six floors above ground level? I couldn’t believe that when I saw it back in the 1990’s.

What’s the real shame is all that incredible 1920s era architecture (high-rises) that are crumbling. If only that could be saved...

Detroit has had a Republican Mayor more recently than Chicago.

Albert Cobo in the 1950s.

Chi-town hasn't had a Republican Mayor since they instituted the BS "nonpartisan" election system in the 1920s.

Most of the South Side, and portions of the west side past the United Airlines center, are very Detroit-like.

Who is Joe?

BTW: We New Yorkers think its interesting that Detroiters call their hot dogs "Coney Islands."

On another note, the real Coney Island is about to get bulldozed and replaced with high rise condos for the Russians.

It seems the best way to upset people these days is to speak the truth.

I’ve always heard good things about downtown Des Moines, IA. Check it out.

Whatever else Daley’s politics are he really keeps Chicago humming. Truth be told it was reborn in the early 80s starting with Jane Byrne and flourished in the 90s under the current Daley. The old Daley was a bigot who didn’t care about the downtown area at all.

I was just in Coney Island two weeks ago. Bulldozing sounds about right to me.

Not as bad as Detroit, though, I’ll give you that.

When I was in grad school, I used to live a 15 minute bus ride from Coney Island. Used to love walking the boardwalk, going to the fishing pier, and shoot pool at Ruby's on the beach.

Personally, it had it rakish charms, if you consider the fact that so much of NYC (including parts of Brooklyn) has become an overpriced theme park, filled with "transplants" and trustafarians. I do think the condos will make it "cleaner", and am encouraged by the fact that most of the buyers will be local Russians, rather than Trevor from UpperMiddleClassWhitelandia, Ohio.

Isn’t this the place that the school board voted to buy every student an I-Pod so that no one would be disadvantaged in learning???

Well, unfortunately, the last Republican Mayor earned permanently infamy as being in the back pocket of Capone and the other mob bosses, Big Bill Thompson. Of course, with the rodents being in power since, it ain’t like corruption died with Hale’s defeat. It was, after all, Anton Cermak who got whacked fleeing Chicago when he tried to hog the podium with Pres-elect FDR in Miami.

I’m familiar with the South & West sides. They are, after all, the bastions for the buffoons Bobby Rush & Junior Jackson, and the single-digit IQd asshat Danny Davis. The Southside (IL-1) was the last urban Black district to send a Republican to Congress (Oscar DePriest) until his defeat in 1934.
