New College of California, a private liberal arts school in San Francisco, is at risk of losing its accreditation for academic and ethical violations.
School administrators, under pressure from faculty, students and the Western Association of Schools & Colleges, announced that they will form a committee to search for a new president and will reconfigure the board of directors.
New College, which emphasizes activism and social change, was put on probation July 5 by the association for violations found by the association's commission. The commission's investigators found that:
-- Students had enrolled in and attended classes long before they were admitted to the college;
-- Grades of incomplete were changed to letter grades by persons not assigned to teach the courses;
-- Independent study was used improperly.
-- The college had insufficient financial reserves, controls and budgeting.

Typical liberal ideology.......Good intent trumps results every time. I am sure the kids who did not complete their course work INTENDED to, but for some reason didn’t. Therefore, someone in the administration decided to reward their good intent by changing their grades. All makes sense to me.
Couldn’t they just “borrow” some cash from the SF Boys/Girls Club Foundation?
I hate it when they can’t follow the playbook!
Social promotion stinks
Calling Ward Churchill! We have an opening for President at New College!
Rules are for reactionary chumps.
If your intentions are good you can make it up as you go along... it worked well enough in Russia and China.
I thought this was about New College in Sarasota, FL, a “hippie school” funded with taxpayer money!
Shocking!
To quote some of the more priceless parts of the article:
Harry Britt, a former San Francisco supervisor who has been on the faculty since 1992, said the school is run by "a small group of people who are very highly motivated by the white male experience of the 1960s."
"There is rhetoric about love and community and trust, but in reality, it is an unhealthy situation because of the abusive and unwelcoming power situated at the top," Britt said.
And the following:
New College is known for its progressive faculty, one-on-one mentoring and the infusion of critical thinking, self-expression, activism and spirituality into the curriculum.
Now recall that the promotion of student activism is one of the reasons behind the college:
"There is a long history of failed attempts at student organizing, and we saw the report as an opportunity to initiate a student council," Zimmer said. "The administration has been incredibly resistant and even hostile to such an idea."
Hypocrisy, thy name is "Progressive" and thou numbers are legion!"
I work in San Francisco, and this “college” is about four blocks from where I work.
This “college” offers Masters’ Degrees in such “academic” subjects as “Women’s Spirituality”, and (my favorite) “Activism and Social Change” ( an M.A. in protesting).
For this, students pay about $15,000 a year.
They don’t call it “Hippie U” for nothing.
The Law School requires students to be “committed to social justice” and trains lawyers to work for non-profits.
San Francisco State University would cost about $8000 for four years.
And, of course, if you missed it, Antioch (the Red Square in Ohio) closed up shop this month.
On top of which, presuming that you’re concerned that you won’t get your money’s worth at SFSU, there is always the Master’s program in Ethnic Dance.
Nice tagline!
; )
You too, dude!
