VIEWED from Iraq, where we just spent eight days meeting with American and Iraqi military and civilian personnel, the political debate in Washington is surreal. The Bush administration has over four years lost essentially all credibility. Yet now the administrations critics, in part as a result, seem unaware of the significant changes taking place.
Here is the most important thing Americans need to understand: We are finally getting somewhere in Iraq, at least in military terms. As two analysts who have harshly criticized the Bush administrations miserable handling of Iraq, we were surprised by the gains we saw and the potential to produce not necessarily victory but a sustainable stability that both we and the Iraqis could live with.
After the furnace-like heat, the first thing you notice when you land in Baghdad is the morale of our troops. In previous trips to Iraq we often found American troops angry and frustrated many sensed they had the wrong strategy, were using the wrong tactics and were risking their lives in pursuit of an approach that could not work.
Today, morale is high. The soldiers and marines told us they feel that they now have a superb commander in Gen. David Petraeus; they are confident in his strategy, they see real results, and they feel now they have the numbers needed to make a real difference.

It dosent matter that we have a good command, we know that our soldiers could destroy the terrorist when ever they want. The only thing is that were not fighting for our country or our people, were fighting for the iraqis. The sodliers may have a good morale “But” they are also dieing in vein. And from my view its turning out to be another Vietnam war.
I love how in order to get published in the NYTimes these guys have to bash the President in their opening paragraph, as a way of establishing their bona fides with the lunatic left. Only after that act of obeisance is complete can they proceed with the substance of their article. It seems this is the new dictate. ESPN coverage of the Iraqi soccer victory, buried on their web-site as a non story, saw a similar editorial pattern from the AP. The first paragraph in the article bashes the President and American policy, and only then proceeds with the substance of the story.
BULL. If we lose in Iraq, Americans will die at the hands of terrorists. You’re buying into the leftist rhetoric.
Though I’ve always been opposed to the war, I’m loathe to think of our troops dying in vain. I want to believe that something good will come of this down the road. Worried though I am, since we made the commitment, I’ve never give up hope that a cohesive goverbnment can be formed, that a republic can be established and that the Muslims will begin to purge their religion of the fanatics, that Christians (mostly Eastern Catholic) will be allowed to live there in peace. Long shot? Absolutely. Way long. But never give up hope. Keep praying.
The guys that wrote this have been liberal critics of the war for a long time. Wonder if Dirty Harry will read this? Doubt it. Doesn’t follow his script.
Because they had to, in order to get it published.
It’s like dipping holy water and crossing yourself before entering the church.
(No offense to Catholics I hope.)

“Pigs flying or Global Cooling in Hell?”
Apparently Gorrebel’s Warming is caused by the heat transfer from Hell to Earth. As a result, Hell has frozen over and the snows of Kilimanjaro have all melted.
>>we know that our soldiers could destroy the terrorist when ever they want.<<
And “we” know this how? Do terrorists come with a barcode? Are they all together in one building or even one town or even one province or even one country? We are fighting an evil ideology. Our military forces are doing what they do to stop bomb makers and snipers, who become ‘civilians’ as soon as the bomb is planted or the grenade is launched.
As General Petraeus said on cspan yesterday “We are playing three-dimensional chess in the dark” in Iraq.
The rest of “us” have to face reality, before we can defeat this global enemy.
BTW, welcome to FreeRepublic.
You wander over from DU Land?
Nonsense. If Iraq goes back to a despotic regime it again becaomes a hotbed for terrorists after WMD.
And then the USA gets attacked again and again.
The left prefers to have people die from unattributable (unblameable) causes.
9/11 was the result of INaction on the part of Clinton, and can’t be attributed to him directly.
The next attack will be due to a failure in intel because of the left’s destruction of the terrorist surveillance program, again, hard to blame it on an action of the left.
However, soldiers and Iraqis dying due to ACTION taken by a Repub pres IS blameable, and they jump all over it.
He sounds like some of the leftist moonbats that used to inhabit the Yahoo message boards.
I just looked outside my window and I could swear I saw a flying pig!
Yeah... in my haste, I misspelled the way I normally write it:
Gorebbel’s Warming
I throw the R in for you-know-who. ;-)
Another signal that the good guys are winning in Iraq is that reporting is beginning to shift to - how many malnourished and without good water Iraqi children there are now.
This was the pre-invasion mantra of the medialeft during the era of UN sanctions against Iraq. The pressure was on the US to drop the sanctions, (since the Europeans really had dropped their support for sanctions and wanted the US to make it official.
That mantra was dropped as soon as the revelations of the corruption all through the sanctions era was made public, and the facts of how Saddam had spent his Oil for Food income.
Reporters going back to the “suffering children” storyline signals to me that life is becoming much more stable in Iraq. Horrible thoughts for the antiBush/antiVictory people.
