WASHINGTON New signs are posted around the White House indicating a new strict enforcement of the dress code, the Washington Post reported Thursday. The code applies to all visitors and staff members, including tourists.
Some tourists are finding the strict clothing restrictions at the White House un-American.
The forbidden items include jeans, sneakers, mini-skirts, t-shirts, tank tops and absolutely no flip flops.
The motivation for the clothing crack-down comes from the Bush Administration who think some of those who work there and those who visit just don't dress appropriately.
I work at a law firm where jeans are NEVER allowed. I’m glad that you can wear them to your workplace, and I wear them periodically as well. But, the WH asked for no jeans. So, this is what you do, just like what I did for my husband. A lightweight pair of pants with a lightweight short-sleeve summer shirt or polo. It’s not that difficult. I guarantee you that my husband was more comfortable and cooler than if he was in jeans at 104 degrees.
This has been Lucy Ramirez, reporting. Back to you, Dan.
>Class has nothing to do with it.<
Class has everything to do with it!
The Dalai Lama reflects his own culture. There seems to be a sad lacking of class in reflecting ours these days.
Perhaps that means our culture is no longer classy!
I repeat that how a people present themselves tells a great deal about that people, their thinking habits AND their standards.
No, it wouldn’t have. Your girls look absolutely beautiful! You’re very lucky. They would have definitely been admitted entrance into the WH. :-)
>These rules would have denied my little girls, in their patriotic sundresses, the thrill of seeing the White House.<
Oh no, they wouldn’t! Your little girls are appropriately dressed and absolutely adorable (provided they are wearing shoes, of course.) :)
Apparently you don't watch C-Span...
That would be the House of Representatives wing of the Capitol.
They were wearing white leather sandals that were comfortable to walk in. Without a back strap. They would have been denied.
Such sandals are worn with dresses to church regularly in hot weather in every church I have ever attended, but that wouldn’t be good enough according to these rules.
Banning disgusting displays I can understand. This I can’t.
Love it!
Dear RINO_Lady,
You posted the following:

Please consider that we elected to occupy the WHite House is a public servant. We did not elect him to be the nation’s husband.
As I remember, the owners of property dress as they wish when visiting their property.
While I likely deplore the general coarsening of American society at least as much as you do, the image of a Texan banning jeans is laughable.
As for the White House not being some theme park, agreed. But that is only because the heirs to Louis Carroll have not sued over the White House becoming a bought and paid for Alice-In_Mexicoland show, thanks to Bush’s border debacle.
Yes, manners and dress have a place, but the Nanny State can’t dress the public. If their parents didn’t teach those basic social graces, and since th public is the ultimate power in America, I hold that the public can dress as they wish when visiting the White House.
ROTFCMEO is not laughing, my friend. It is crying.
I have class. I have sandals, cut-offs, T-shirt, sunglasses and a straw hat. Women are at their best when worked up and mad:) I seem to be good at that:)
See #34 and #144.
I guess all that tradition of the WH being "the people's house" is just so much claptrap anyway.
The audacity of some people to visit their house wearing what they want. What cheek. If they can't dress right let them eat cake.
I pay for that House, therefore I should be able to visit in in flip-flops if I so chose.
I’m just waiting for the first Soldier on mid-tour leave from Iraq to get kicked out of a White House tour by some zealous rules nanny because he was wearing jeans and sneakers.
This is how it happens. First they tell us how to dress in the WH, then they tell us how to dress elsewhere.
This is actually a return to the previous dress code that had been in place before the previous administration turned the White House into a trailer park.
Now go out and buy some more foil. You missed a spot behind your left ear.
