I have firsthand knowledge of this; my daughter is severely mentally retarded due to a brain disorder known as Angelman Syndrome, which is a result of a piece of a chromosome deleted, and then the chromosome replicates abnormally in the brain. This leads to severe retardation.

I recently attended a conference where research scientists wer discussing "mouse models". ,p> This is a procedure where mouse eggs are retrieved, the piece of the chromosome is extracted and the egg is fertilized normally. You wind up with a mentally retarded mouse that exhibits many of the characteristics of Angelman Syndrome.

The goal is gene replacement therapy, which essentially would allow the generation of a certain protein that is responsible for synapse firing in the brain neurons; or at the very least a drug that could enable the synapse to fire.

Mouse models are be studied for a variety of mental disorders.
