Thompsons Race Hasnt Quite Begun, but Turmoil Has By SUSAN SAULNY
Former Senator Fred D. Thompson has yet to make a formal declaration that he is running for president, but already his noncampaign campaign has gone through its first shake-up.
A week of personnel turnover that extended from his campaign-manager-in-waiting down to volunteers raised questions about whether the Thompson camp is prepared to jump fully into the race for the Republican presidential nomination, a race in which his rivals have had months to establish their campaign organizations, raise money and hone strategy.
It also ignited speculation in Republican circles about who is really in charge, and in particular about the extent of the role being played by Mr. Thompsons wife, Jeri Kehn Thompson, a former political operative.
On Tuesday, Tom Collamore, a top adviser to Mr. Thompson, stepped aside. At the same time, Mr. Thompsons political operation announced that it was bringing in Randy Enwright, a veteran Republican strategist with ties to the Bush family, and former Energy Secretary Spencer Abraham, to take over the prospective campaign. The next day, the organizations research director quit, and other staff members walked out.
Mr. Thompson, an actor and former senator from Tennessee, has been publicly considering a run for the presidency since March.
They are dancing on the edge, and its a pretty sharp edge, said Robert Haus, a Republican political consultant in Des Moines. In all fairness, you have to assume that the Thompson campaign is trying to quickly put bricks and mortar under some very high expectations.

Sure.
I recommend you go fishing on a hot summer day, have a beer, relax and enjoy the experience.
Speculation, insinuation, presumption, hearsay...damn good gossip column. Oh wait, nevermind...
The missing$$ is from the grassroots and it will show up once Fred gets in or an acceptable lower tier candidate moves up.
Joe lunchbucket isn’t stupid and wont be wasting cash on the MSM “Big Three” because they know none of them are electable.
RUDY is scary!
For what?
But...but...I thought she was just a ditzy blond bimbo < / S >
Well, the “bimbo trophy wife” angle didn’t float, so now they have to fall back on the “evil political operative.”
LOL! See my #48.
Too early to have a horse in this race, but campaign upheaval is never a good thing — and when it’s this early it means the people initially selected proved to be a bad selection . . . so just what was that initial selection process?
Did Thompson have a selection process for those initial hires? Did he follow it? If the answers are yes, then why was the process so poor?
And what is in the process for selection of these new people? How did that process yield the open borders Abraham?
All this does not speak of executive excellence.
His supporters said it, not Thompson.
When that date passed it was stated he would announce in late August. Now the latest statement is September. I'll believe it when I see it.
September is the logical time to declare. Summer's over, it's the last quarter of the year, etc.
You mean the folks who helped get Bush elected through two tumultuous and difficult national campaigns? Who better for him to use? They obviously know how its done.
FRED has never said when he's announce, so any speculation by the press is exactly that, speculation.
If she is considered a "bimbo" I really need to refocus and mindfully redefine my definition of what a "bimbo" is. ; )
They're both tanking..... (Keep up the great work!)
What ever suits their agenda I guess.
They aren't related.
The MSM is so juvenile. Thompson was and is under no obligation to announce just because some candidates started their campaigns obscenely early to maximize their $$$-raising potential.
That is seared, seared in my memory.
LOL. There is no upheaval. Campaigns are a revolving door, people are always coming or leaving, especially before officially declaring.
How did that process yield the open borders Abraham?
Somewhat discouraging, but keep in mind that Abraham rebuilt the Michigan GOP from rubble into a powerhouse in the late 80s. He may have stunk as a Senator but he's a great behind the scenes guy.
