Two television news helicopters covering a police pursuit crashed and burned in a central Phoenix park, killing at least two people. Watch for reports throughout the day. A KTVK T-V anchor tearfully told viewers that one of the helicopters was theirs, and that the pilot and photographer aboard were killed. KNXV-TV said the other helciopter was theirs.
Thanks HAL for posting this item and also for sheparding some sanity through the thread. Over the years you have proved to be one of FR’s shining stars.
Plenty, of course. But since police helicopters fly at 400' AGL, and the news copters fly at 1,000' AGL, how is that going to happen? (another rhetorical question, sorry.)
The reason that news helicopters don't "run into" police helicopters is that police helicopters are far more likely to hit the ground 400 feet below than they are to rapidly climb 600 feet and hit a news bird. Get it now?
Yes. I was in ignorance of those facts and now I'm not. Thanks.
Looking at the post again, it seemed as if I was being rude. That was not my intent. Sorry if it caused you any distress.
Ban them?
Whooa...
In LA you can have 3 law enforcement helicopters and 6 news helicopters covering the the same event, and do it perfectly safe, as they do many, many times a year.
When it gets to the point the west coasters start viewing it as a snow day its time to put an end to it.
What does this mean?
Not at all. I have pretty thick skin and am glad you gave me the information. Also glad to know the police keep safe distance from the MSM choppers.
Worst one I saw was an EA-6B as well - two jets, one crossed over the top of the other one, basically erased the canopy and the tops of the aircrew from the lower jet - top jet made it back with some nasty smears - the other rolled in and dug a hole.
Had a mid air collision between too Hornets my one and only cruise. We found an oil slick, nothing else....
Its time we ban...
I have a hard time with any statement that begins with those four words.
Same here, when it comes to personal rights.
This is a ‘professional decision’ driven by ratings of ‘live police chases’.
If they had fell on a school, rather than an open space, what would you say?
Its time we ban news organizations from broadcasting police chases live in my opinion.
Not likely, but if a news chopper had run into a police chopper tracking the suspect I wonder what kind of heat we might see.
If the chopper’s had fallen on a school, or a packed expressway.....
Its time we ban news organizations from broadcasting police chases live in my opinion. Ive been waiting for something like this to happen over a Los Angeles freeway since OJs infamous slow speed chase.
Ban them?
Whooa...
Ban ‘broadcasting live’. Not ‘ban helicopters’ nor ‘ban reporters from helicopters’.
Just stop making it a way of bumping the local stations ratings. Its causing pilots to do stupid things, like hover one on top of another over residential areas.
Yes, lets just ban all this.
Yes, lets just ban all this.
Just broadcasting it ‘live’. Not just because of the helicopter crash, but there are way too many idiots that see it happening on TV, and try to ‘insert themselves’ into this ‘reality tv deluxe’.
You should call all the television stations and demand they stop their live broadcasting. Tell them it upsets you.

whatever.
Hey, lets ban phrases from the 80s while were at it.
It's so Valley girl.
whatever.
Fer sure, fer sure
There is no reason for further discussion. Your like a kid playing with daddy’s CB in the driveway, taunting truckers for no reason.
Whatever.
Yep.
