BOISE, Idaho (AP) - The Boise State running back who scored the winning points in the Fiesta Bowl, then proposed to his cheerleader girlfriend on national television, says he has hired security for their wedding because of racial threats.
Ian Johnson, who is black, and Chrissy Popadics, who is white, are due to be married Saturday in Boise. Since his Jan. 1 proposal, Johnson said, he has received phone calls, letters and some personal threats from people who object to their marriage plans.
"You take it for what it is - the less educated, the less willing to change," Johnson, 21, of San Dimas, Calif., told the Idaho Statesman for its Tuesday editions. "But we're not acting like we're naive to all the stuff that's going on. We know what's been said. We're going to make sure we're safe at all times. It's an amazing day for us, and we'd hate to have it ruined by someone."
"It's really sad because a lot of people that are probably doing it are the same people who were cheering me on," Johnson said.

I know very few white racists...almost none.
I don’t believe that not wishing to marry outside one’s race is racist.
When I grew up a racist was a supremacist.
It’s all beyond silly.
The pointy hat crowd was ridiculous then and the slathering petrified “I’m not racist crowd “ today is just as ridculous.
Folks should marry who they want and they should beable to choose who they wish not to marry as well even if that reason is not politically correct.
Down where I live I would bet that less than 1% of black-white relationships involve marriage and they are almost always black guy/white woman and serial by nature.
When it’s the reverse, it’s usually a better deal. Good looking mixed race mulatto woman of high culture and professional white guy. And no mulatto is not a bad word. I know some who call themselves that with pride in Haiti where it matters
maybe it’s different up north..
the thirst to find and exploit white racism is unsatable
Definitely the highlight of the evening.
Darn this keyboard.
It is a shame some hateful jerk has nothing better to do. I guess some people are so full of hate that is all they have.
Awwwe! That’s cute!
I wish the newlyweds well. In fact I hope they have a super nice honeymoon, and he’s not too tired (wink, wink) when Boise St pays Washington Sat, Sep 8.
GO DAWGS!
Cute girl. She also seems to have quite a tan.
They’re going to have adorable kids. Good luck to them both.
Sorry to disapoint you, but I am not of mixed race. Yeah, I checked, all the way back to Scotland.
I know that it’s not PC to state that, but there it is.
Yep, you’re right.
I don’t mean to be personal but was your dad Jewish?
they seemed to be more likely for that in my day...back when this was far more controversial
there is a sorta PC book out now called Color of Water about a marriage from my homestate like this...it’s pretty complex
my daughter on my homepage is one of two from my marriage to a Brasilian of lebanese maronite extraction....they have a glimpse into this...at least culturally....most folks think they are latino ...lol...my portugese is better than their’s
in reality most black women would do well with white men...jmo
another trend I have seen lately are black lesbians really coming out and grouping.....at least here in Nashville
do you consider yourself of which culture or both?
i know a kid like you here...a handsome boy with dreads who acts very white and I know others who act not so white...slang and speech patterns etc.
is it class or environment?
They’re a cute couple. If anything, I’m jealous. ha ha
I’d like to get married too.
Where did the people from Scotland come from? They were not created in Scotland or evolved there (depending on your belief..) A lot of Scotland, Ireland, Wales, and Cornwall are descendants of the Celts who migrated from Eastern Europe, Asia before that, India before that, Africa before that. Even the 'Norse' family lines, if you go far enough back, can be traced to the near East.
The interesting thing is, many in Scotland and Ireland have family trees that can be traced recently to the Moors, when the Spanish Armada sank off the coast of Ireland.. At that, what we call 'white' people are the most 'mutt' out of everyone..
BTW, just for the record, in my traced ancestry so far (we have direct trees thus far traced back to the 14th century) I'm also Scot (Stewart Clan) but I also am German, Native American, and Japanese..
If you want to learn some interesting things, I would suggest signing up for the Family DNA Tree project.. they can show by your DNA how your family tree spreads all over the world..
race is a hot topic
folks speak out of boths sides of their mouths
racist is the new A word for today’s Cotton Mathers
and the hunt for a new white Hester Prynne is always on
enough is enough
Good for them. Best wishes. A cute couple.
Cheers,
AR
You can also put your last name in and see if your family is already taking part.
Sorry, I don’t get your meaning. Kindly explain.
No. My dad is Catholic. But yes there are couples like that out there.
they seemed to be more likely for that in my day...back when this was far more controversial
Right, among Reform Jews, it's no big deal to date people of color. They've been oppressed so it makes it "okay" to date Blacks.
do you consider yourself of which culture or both?
I do not identify myself with "one race" but I grew up in white culture in a white collar neighborhood.
is it class or environment?
From my experience, it is mostly due to class.
Growing up in Maryland, I knew that Alan Keyes' kids lived in a "rich area" and went to a private school. They acted "white" (the better word to use is well-mannered and educated children) and did not seem to identify with black culture.
But then again, that school was virtually all white and thus they did not have to worry about peer pressure from acting "too white".
i know a kid like you here...a handsome boy with dreads who acts very white and I know others who act not so white...slang and speech patterns etc.
Yes, I know people like that. I think it depends mostly on which class their family are in. If their parents were doctors/lawyers, it is unlikely that they would seek to emulate hip hop culture.
