WASHINGTON - A group of Senate Democrats called Wednesday for a special counsel to investigate whether Attorney General Alberto Gonzales perjured himself regarding the firings of U.S. attorneys and administration dissent over President Bush's domestic surveillance program.
"We ask that you immediately appoint an independent special counsel from outside the Department of Justice to determine whether Attorney General Gonzales may have misled Congress or perjured himself in testimony before Congress," four Democratic senators wrote in a letter Wednesday, according to a draft obtained by The Associated Press.
"It has become apparent that the Attorney General has provided at a minimum half-truths and misleading statements" to the Judiciary Committee, they added.

WASHINGTON (AP) The White House defended Attorney General Alberto Gonzales on Thursday against accusations he gave misleading testimony to Congress. A key Republican senator critical of Gonzales said there was no sign that President Bush's support for the attorney general was weakening.
Sen. Arlen Specter, the top Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee, accompanied Bush on an Air Force One on a trip to Philadelphia. At a hearing on Tuesday, the Pennsylvania Republican had told Gonzales, "I do not find your testimony credible, candidly."

Since when have dems considered perjury a crime? It was perfectly acceptable to them when Clinton lied under oath.
At the very least he can’t handle public speaking, at worst, he’s a lying dog who tried to dance his way around testimony in front of some of the biggest liars in the country....The Judiciary Committee.
No kidding.
Special Prosecutor = Witch hunt these days.
Bush would be insane to appoint another special prosecutor.
Du is left and Kos playground is right. Only people that think Gonzales lied our liberals, trolls and Schumer lackeys. Spend a little time at the heavyweight conservative blog sites like Powerline or Captain Quarters and you might learn something, like Gonzales did not lie. They break it down where a first grader could understand this is all BS.
Competency tests for politicians would make nearly all of them one termer’s.
Can’t continue in other professions when incompetent or corrupt, why should elected leadership be different?
Watching our elected leaders makes the idea of all elected leadership being chosen by random drawing look better and better.
Sure, after we probe Sandy Berger.
And you think the Dems are the ones who give a flip about truth?
What be you smoking mon?
If Bush/Repubs had a brain, they would investigate the Dems as vigorously as the Dems are going after Bush/Repubs. And should have started with Bush’s first term.
Feinstein’s hubby deals.
Reid’s land scandals.
etc
Finding dirt on Dems is about as tough as finding trash at a landfill.
But then again, the Repub leadership would need a spine first.
I guess you assume everyone lies. Attorney General through out America should follow the laws of this nation by telling the truth at all times. Again I am not saying Gonzales lied but what the American people expect from AG.
The stupid party could be making such hay of this, but they are just sitting there taking it up the butt from the dems again and again. The GOP should be screaming about how ALL the democrats do is investigate, and it’s ONLY to divert attention from their own incompetence, criminal activity, and low approval ratings. Bush has nothing to lose, he should also pound this.
Gee, I am glad I have company. It’s not only their stupidity it is that reality has evaded them and they have no clue what it is. I hope enough people are as sick of them as we are so we can finally get some statesmen in office and not self-serving, ignorant politicians
“Statesmen in office”? Don’t hold your breath. I’d settle for someone with just a bit of common sense who wouldn’t worry so much about being in office for life. Hell’s bells, we’re headed like a juggernaut into yet another presidential campaign season with absolutely no one to get the least bit excited about. Gonna be another in a very long line of “lesser of two evils” Hobson’s choices for us poor suckers.
The worst is that we have managed to let things get in this shape, and there seems to be no end to it. Settling for mediocrity is now the American way of life, and there aren’t enough old curmudgeons like me left to change anything. The electorate, on the whole, has become dumber and dumber, and he (or she) who panders to the largest bunch of gimme, gimmes gets the prize — every time out of the box. It is a rotten shame, but we get what we deserve, I suppose.
Gonzales has been a miserable AG, and reflects no credit at all on Bush. He should have the decency to go just because he sucks. Only trouble is, who knows what kind of bizarre nomination would be made to replace him.
He lied.
The pro-terror wing of the Democratic Party are pissed that Gonzales wants to tap in on the conversations of terrorists. That is all, boys ands girls.
