Many Republican faithful, from the grass roots to the Capitol, have concluded that Fred Thompson, the preternaturally avuncular actor and former Senator from Tennessee, is the cure-all for their party's ills.
Thompson has yet to enter the presidential race, and yet Thompson already shares front-runner status with former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani in some national polls of gop voters.
Thompson will spend the rest of the summer raising money, which he was scheduled to do conspicuously at a donor event in Washington on July 28. Another advantage to waiting: the longer he remains an unofficial candidate, the longer NBC can air reruns of Law & Order featuring Thompson as Manhattan DA Arthur Branch without running afoul of the equal-time provision of federal campaign law.
"His timing has been brilliant so far," insists Tennessee Congressman Zach Wamp, who led the effort to convince Thompson he should run. "While he's been waiting, some candidates have been falling and the others haven't been moving. Frankly, there's been a lot of advantages to [it]. He's probably gotten more attention not being a candidate than he would have being a candidate."
While Thompson's undeclared campaign , raises money and figures out how to live up to the hype surrounding his candidacy, his potential opponents are busy adjusting to the new dynamics of the race.
The problem for Giulianiand the rest of the fieldis that Thompson has the same strategy, and the Tennessean's Southern drawl and conservative voting record are likely to play well in South Carolina.
If Thompson can keep enthusiasm high until he enters the race in the fall, he might be able to turn what was supposed to be a marathon race for the nomination into a relatively brief, four-month sprint.

I think others are frustrated because this has been posted hundreds of times and there have been some people who have tried to bait folks with false articles or misleading info (which you didn’t, but people are defensive..)
I am confused as to why this is addressed to me...
Good freepers don't need to be spoon fed. Thank God buckhead wasn't like you - Dan Rather would still be doing the CBS Evening Nooz.
Clinton Lover!
(Just trying to reduce turn around time for WannabeTurk)
You were listed 2nd, which is often used as a cc, which is how that was meant.
I wish FR had an explicit cc: in posting.
It doesn’t matter what he has said, or done or written, it is what we “True Conservatives” say that counts...
Now move on down the kiddie forum and argue about Harry Potter and the devil will ya!
This forum is for grownups...
Neener neener neener...
No, no man can save the GOP. Men are faulty by nature.
Adopting conservatism as the go to philosophy that will guide the party’s positions CAN HELP save the party from the Rockefellar minority path they’ve been on. Depending on how widely its embraced. certainly having a president that did so would go quite a way to forcing the rest of the party to do just that.
Hey are you like that Fair tax guy using another ID?
Thanks again for responding.
oh, just keeping me in the loop I see, cool, thanks...
I’m witchoo.
RU, I wonder, merely uninformed = or deliberately thumping a false drum?
Spenser A. is a Christian, from generations of Christians - Christian Arab-American, a communicant of the Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese.
as a poster on another thread wrote:
"Yeah, an Arab whose ancestors held out against the jihad for 1400 years. Spencer Abraham is an Orthodox Christian. He probably has a great-great-great uncle or two, or maybe even a direct ancestor who are numbered among the Holy Martyrs because they died at the hands of Muslims for defending their faith in Christ. Sure hes pro-Israel, ..."
So either you're ignorant of this, deliberately trying to cement a false view, or just plain ignorant? (I ask, I do not accuse)
I understand one of the Left’s biggest plans is to split our side so bad, we don’t vote.. they do this one way by planting false or misleading stories through viral marketing (blogs, message boards, etc..)
After seeing how this is done, and the extent it is done, I question EVERYTHING..
More claims about Spencer are starting to smell fishy..
This has to hurt the GOP declared frontrunners. this story is based on TWO assumptions, ONE that the GOP is floundering with a pathetic declared slate. (see political pygmies), TWO that the democrats have their entire act together.
Time also seems to be implying FDT is “the best they can do.”
Naturally Time wants him to look bad. And there he sits, photographed from below at a weird angle that makes his knees bigger than his head and puts his socks and his trouser cuffs front and center, and they even got him with a scowl on his face.
Yet even with that malignant intent to make him look bad, he looks pretty good. Of course he’s scowling. That’s a Time photographer he’s scowling at.
It augurs well for his ability to get past the antics of the liberal press and speak to the people.
>>>I understand one of the Lefts biggest plans is to split our side so bad, we dont vote..
Going Independent is a pressure release valve for RINOs. If the GOP doesnt take care of their people, if they dont provide Leaders with Integrity, and they dont, than instead of their voters throwing them out of office they want people to vote with their feet and join a third party or go Independent.
And that is what the base does. They vote with their feet and leave the GOP.
There is nothing wrong with letting that pressure build up and result in a changed political system that hopefully results in the return of our platform for the Republicans rather than have them vote with their feet and go to a third party.
It seems a bit disconcerting to try to name all the RINO SOB’s in just one sentence. Of course, there are several more that could easily qualify. I’m thinking that we are closer to taxation without representation than we like to admit. Term limits on the whole damn government won’t help unless we can get some people with integrity to replace these lifers.
Fred may not be perfect, but he is recognizable, decent, able to communicate and hopefully electable.
Time is pushing the spin that the GOP NEEDS saving.
Time is just bashing the GOP.
My biggest concerns are FDT staffers. If he is just going to have the same old pro-amnesty, pro-islamist, and anti-marriage types that just would diminish him.
If I want hillary clinton’s policies in a republican I would vote for guiliani.
