A STATEMENT FROM SCOTT THOMAS BEAUCHAMP: (TNR's diarist comes clean)
The New Republic ^ | 7/26/07 | Scott Thomas Beauchamp

Posted on 07/26/2007 4:26:20 AM PDT by TomB

A STATEMENT FROM SCOTT THOMAS BEAUCHAMP:

As we've noted in this space, some have questioned details that appeared in the Diarist "Shock Troops," published under the pseudonym Scott Thomas. According to Major Kirk Luedeke, a public affairs officer at Forward Operating Base Falcon, a formal military investigation has also been launched into the incidents described in the piece.

Although the article was rigorously edited and fact-checked before it was published, we have decided to go back and, to the extent possible, re-report every detail. This process takes considerable time, as the primary subjects are on another continent, with intermittent access to phones and email. Thus far we've found nothing to disprove the facts in the article; we will release the full results of our search when it is completed.

In the meantime, the author has requested that we publish the statement below. --The Editors

My Diarist, "Shock Troops," and the two other pieces I wrote for the New Republic have stirred more controversy than I could ever have anticipated. They were written under a pseudonym, because I wanted to write honestly about my experiences, without fear of reprisal. Unfortunately, my pseudonym has caused confusion. And there seems to be one major way in which I can clarify the debate over my pieces: I'm willing to stand by the entirety of my articles for the New Republic using my real name.

I am Private Scott Thomas Beauchamp, a member of Alpha Company, 1/18 Infantry, Second Brigade Combat Team, First Infantry Division.

My pieces were always intended to provide my discreet view of the war; they were never intended as a reflection of the entire U.S. Military. I wanted Americans to have one soldier's view of events in Iraq.

It's been maddening, to say the least, to see the plausibility of events that I witnessed questioned by people who have never served in Iraq. I was initially reluctant to take the time out of my already insane schedule fighting an actual war in order to play some role in an ideological battle that I never wanted to join. That being said, my character, my experiences, and those of my comrades in arms have been called into question, and I believe that it is important to stand by my writing under my real name.

    --Private Scott Thomas Beauchamp

No, he joined the military to get the credentials to make him a STAR in the world of liberal idiocy.

I read elsewhere (and GOD, there is a lot to read, start at Hot Air), that he is an aspiring writer, and he feels his military "service" will give him the moral high ground when he writes his liberal drivel. So you're essentially correct.

Here’s more - she quoted him in a Sept. 2004 article which indicated he was a DEAN activist from 2003 and that he was then editor-in-chief of the campus left-wing “magazine”....

And I posted this twelve hours ago. What's your point?

Nothing really. The original blog entry at TNR is dated 6:30am. This thread is dated 6:26am. And my time zone is set correctly.

At OPFOR, their blogged timestamp is 6:07am but no time zone listed.

OPFOR

Checking further in the source, the rdf: references for XML show: dc:date="2007-07-26T06:07:12-08:00"

I suppose that's Pacific time and would be 11:07am EDST.

Isn't TNR still on the east coast?

Well, as I said, when I posted this at 7:26 am Eastern, there was only one hit for the guys full name, now there are pages worth. My only complaint was that I originally put this in breaking news, thinking "Hey, this is breaking news", since nobody at 7 this morning knew this guys name. But given this place's antipathy toward blogs, I guess the whole controversy wasn't important enough.

Not every blog is worthy. But if our mission has changed from exposing the libmedia bias to replacing the libmedia with New Media (Rush, Levin, Ingraham, the blogosphere), then folks need to get over their condescension towards blogs. I think some FReepers are touchy because a few Dinosaur Media outlets have referred to us as a chatroom or a blog and they just can't get over it.

I'm not sure what day they publish TNR any more but you might otherwise have waited up to six days and then only got the story filtered via the TV shows or other sources mentioning it. So blogs are valuable but not all blogs are created equal.

I wondered why this was not in breaking news all day here on FR. I guess that explains it.

Did he do all those things he wrote about, but wrote it to make it sound like he was witnessing other soldiers doing it? He decided to 'create a reality' about the behavior of soldiers in Iraq in order to write articles for The New Republic and discredit them?

Heinous.

If you are telling the truth, then you’re an even bigger POS. What kind of dirtbag makes fun of a disfigured soldier?

Exactly. The supposed "incident" involving the disfigured woman is not just the relaying of a story he witnessed but is a story where he was not only involved but where he claims he was onboard with the cruel teasing.

I don't believe the story is true but, true or not, in the end he has put on the record that he either engaged in such cruel behavior or he was willing to dishonestly portray himself as having been so cruelly demeaning. Either way he is a dispicable man.

"Fighting only for the “riches of empire” — ah, yes, this guy is truly an honest, objective source on the happenings in Iraq........" This is what amazes me about idiots like this guy, Jesse McBeth, and anyone else of their ilk. They leave all this evidence of their actual political/motivational leanings on myspace, facebook, various blogs, etc. They don't have the smarts to try to retract/eliminate their postings/accounts and so their ideological axe is so easy to find.

This guy has no future that he may have envisioned when starting this series of "confessions." He is just a less resourceful and less polished John Kerry-type that purposely wanted to use the military to burnish his military creds so that he could speak with supposed authority and maybe parlay this "gig" into either a political career or some leftwing "journalist" or columnist(probably the latter.) Not gonna happen. Hell he didn't even do what was right and report it to commanders.

What a loser!

TomB put in Breaking when he first posted it. That’s where I found it. Then it disappeared. Go figure....

I wondered why this was not in breaking news all day here on FR. I guess that explains it.

As soon as I read TNR's statement this morning I posted it over here. I thought twice about putting it in "breaking news" knowing the feelings some here have for blogs. And considering this is mainly a blog-driven story, I figured it wouldn't last long there. Anyway, I did post it in BN, and by the time I got back to the computer later in the morning, it was gone.

As I said earlier, its a shame because if this wasn't the first place where the story broke, it was definitely one of the first.

As GWB observed, some people here have a real "thing" about blogs, but I see hardly and overlap between FR and blogs. The antagonism just doesn't make sense.

But not all blogs. Powerline is posted often and that's a blog, as is Michelle Malkin's site where much of this is also playing out. But I've noticed lately that not much, blog or not, stays in Breaking these days.

Not sure what is going on with the mods regarding what is Breaking News and what is not. Some items stay on there for days, others disappear almost immediately. This place has changed quite a bit over the years. But it is still my first read of the day!

There’s a lot of phoney baloney at The Nation with its hit piece on the military as well, including the story being written by one Leila al-Arian (remember Jihadist Sammi al-Arian? Yup).
