On a night four years ago, five soldiers back from three months in Iraq went drinking at a Hooters restaurant and a topless bar near Fort Benning, Ga.
Before the night was over, one of them, Specialist Richard R. Davis, was dead of at least 33 stab wounds, his body doused with lighter fluid and burned. Two of the group would eventually be convicted of the murder, another pleaded guilty to manslaughter, and the last confessed to concealing the crime.
Now some in Hollywood want moviegoers to decide if the killing is emblematic of a war gone bad, part of a new and perhaps risky willingness in the entertainment business to push even the touchiest debates about post-9/11 security, Iraq and the troops status from the confines of documentaries into the realm of mainstream political drama.
On Sept. 14, Warner Independent Pictures expects to release In the Valley of Elah, a drama inspired by the Davis murder, written and directed by Paul Haggis, whose Crash won the Academy Award for best picture in 2006. The film stars Tommy Lee Jones as a retired veteran who defies Army bureaucrats and local officials in a search for his sons killers. In one of the movies defining images, the American flag is flown upside down in the heartland, the signal of extreme distress.
Other coming films also use the damaged Iraq veteran to raise questions about a continuing war. In Grace Is Gone, directed by James C. Strouse and due in October from the Weinstein Company, John Cusack and two daughters struggle with the loss of a wife and mother who is killed on duty. Kimberly Peirces Stop-Loss, set for release in March by Paramount, meanwhile, casts Ryan Phillippe as a veteran who defies an order that would send him back to Iraq.

Wow. This is REALLY unique. Like THIS has never happened before.
Scum. They are ALL scum. We cannot allow the honor and good name of our military to be impugned as they were during Vietnam.
We MUST not allow it.
There's no need for action here. Prediction: every one of these UNPATRIOTIC liberal films will open to huge accolades and small box-office receipts.
Those of us who grew up in the ‘70s well remember when the “deranged Vietnam veteran” was the villain in about half the crime dramas. Dispicable.
Let them spend $100’s of millions of dollars, and then watch them scratch their heads when they only make 1% of their investment back! Bunch of dumbasses!
I was watching So You Think You Can Dance on Fox tonight, and one of the choreographer’s made all the contestants dance this anti-war dance to express their frustrations about the war in Iraq. They needed to do this to stay in the competition. I wonder what would have happened if one of them refused. Needless to say I wont be watching that show anymore.
Either way, the pro American said is losing the public relations war to the enemy within. And best believe, there is an active enemy within. These people are relentless and will use any occassion to shove their point of view down others throats. Not surprised the propoganda films are on their way. And people wonder why we cant win wars anymore. If we dont stand up and say enough is enough, than it doesnt take a rocket scientist to figure out how this will end. I fear the outcome my friends.
Needless to say I wont be watching that show anymore.

Why watch it anyway? In the race to find something, anything, to fill time slots, the industry is creating ever more boring shows which would be an embarrassment to a first grader. The only new show I have seen which is even slightly interesting is “Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader” and it gets to be too much after a few weeks. Jeff Foxworthy and the kids are what keep it going.
It is Iraqsploitation.
This defines Hollywood.
"Show me just what Mohammed brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached." - Manuel II Palelologus
I wonder if they are going to play that crap at the base ran theaters overseas. I for one would never watch any of that crap, it’s bad enough AFN likes to jam MSNBC down our throats for what seems like 70% of the day. Forgive me if I seem like I’m venting, FR and other sites like it is where I get all my entertainment these days.
I can’t wait for the time that Hollywood and other such putrid smelling scum will do themselves in.
Remember, Tommy Lee JOnes was Al Gore’s roommate at Harvard and supported him vigorously during his 2000 presidential run.
All of these movies will lose money and sell about like “sicko’.
LLS
If they did, we would see a slew of movies about teachers featuring the nut case teacher brought back facing possible charges in the Jon Benet murder case or playing up that profession’s string of child abusers....or
Hollywood would never again put forth an honorable journalist, but instead, inundate us with films about the liars and cheats who published false stories....or
Well, you get the idea.
When some reprobate inner city scum rapes and murders an innocent teenager is that a symbol of Liberalism gone bad? Spare me.
They keep churning this garbage out despite the fact it doesn’t sell. A couple years ago when all the movies nominated for best picture were liberal crap (Brokeback, Capote, etc.) the penguin movie nominated for best documentary made more money that all the best picture nominees combined.
I think Senator Joseph McCarthy might have been on to something.

I know right?!
Earth to Michael, “quickly”?
1. It’s been 4+ years sparky, they’re a little late if just starting now.
2. They’ve been making movies crtical of the Iraq war since at least March 2003 (F911).
3. This is not the first of its kind to disrespectfully portray the troops propensity for “killing [] emblematic of a war gone bad” See Jarhead (years old already).
The NYSlimes has the worst “reporters” in modern media history. They are a joke. Research is an unfamiliar term and hyperbole their trademark. In my view, they’ve become one step above the National Inquirer.
Nothing new. There was some of the same happings during WW2, according to my dad. There are always animals waiting to jump GI’s.
