By the time Tammy Faye Messner died Friday, the outspoken, fake-eyelash-donning 65-year-old had gone from Christian televangelist to reviled woman to gay icon. How did Messner become a gay icon?
With fabulousness and honesty. Tammy Faye's religious background made her an unlikely object for this kind of adulation, but in many ways she had the classic profile of a gay icon. Like many others, she became celebrated for her perseverance. She fell from grace (and lost much of her money) when it was discovered that her husband, Jim Bakker, had cheated on her and swindled their followers out of $158 million. But Tammy Faye talked openly about her pain on TV and stood by her man after his conviction, singing at a press conference, "On Christ the solid rock I stand/ All other ground is sinking sand." Her refusal to change her unique style—runny mascara, gawdy jewelry, and all—also made her icon-worthy.

Tammy Faye never struck me as incredibly bright. She seemed on par with “Edith Bunker.” I assume she meant well but was a bit separated from reality.
Now I’m really confused. Tammy Faye Potter dies at the end of the last book?
I smiled when I read your post. I remember someone saying to me “I refuse to go to church because of all the hypocrites”. I answered that I couldn’t think of a better place for them to be.
Donn Summer did everything she could to kiss up to the gays-even denying the Word, but they dropped her. Her faith wasn’t that rooted after all. I hope she’s repented and now stands on His word...... I always liked her music.
LOL If hypocrites and sinners didn't go to church...the place would be empty! :)
If you turn your head , you will see I am standing next to you !
Beautifully and honestly said, LaineyDee.
but!...
I think we might have alot of company... whether they'd like to admit it or not. *chuckle*
If a brother or sister in my church is sinning, I have the right and MUST confront them so they turn away from that sin. I will not judge a dead woman. That’s God’s job, not ours.
That’s what Christianity should be all about. Thank YOU for doing that. I’m sure these people had enough condemnation from christians and others, and your compassion had a true long lasting effect on their lives.
Exactly!
the Bible belt has a lot of women with tons of HAIR! They like big hair, I guess and long white boots.
Klaus Nomi ping!
:-)
True of the entire world.
Right - at least they are trying to learn the right way. Those outside are not even trying.
Maybe they just like the attention they get from men when all dolled up.
Of course, seeing myself in the mirror in the mornings without make-up makes me understand why make-up is such a hot seller.
Even a tiny bit makes a ton of difference.
It irritates me that I have to go around feeling like a scumbum when I leave off the make-up and the “doing the hair” while my husband just gets to go anywhere as he is. No thirty minutes of hair duty and make-up. Such a drag.
Freedom........freedom.........we need freedom.
With exceptions. I don't always go to church because of my job duties....but I take time daily to pray, read and talk to the Lord. We are ultimately responsible for our own salvation and walk with the Lord. Too many rely on others... or try to ride someone else's coat tails to glory.
You're right though, in that we are not to forsake the gathering of ourselves together. Some of us have a difficult time in doing that on a regular basis.... but I do have support system in place with other gals who are praying Christians. :)
We are not brainwashed!
(You've GOT the 'freedom'; just not the courage. ;^)
