The U.S. military and the Iraqi government continue to court the tribes in the provinces surrounding Baghdad. One day after the tribes in the city of Taji in Salahadin province pledged to fight al Qaeda in Iraq and the Mahdi Army, a tribal meeting was held in the city of Khalis in Diyala province. Seventy-five tribal leaders gathered and vowed to fight al Qaeda in Iraq, its Islamic State front, and other insurgent groups. Here, right now, I am denouncing the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Qaeda, said one sheik in attendance.

If there’s anything the Arab tribes are good at it’s getting on the winning bandwagon. Looks like they’re piling on now.
(better grab a chair)
Reid, Murtha, Pelosi, Kerry, and the rest of the human debris in DC will be having diarrhea here shortly. Considering who I’m talking about, there won’t be much left of them afterwards.
When the bullets start flying and the streets run red with rivers of Al Qaeda blood I will believe them.
If we can teach these folks anything it’s not to wait on Baghdad (D.C.).
I think we have reached a tipping point. This next month will tell the tale.
I think that is what we are seeing. Perhaps you are saying you are looking for the Iraqi tribesmen killing al Qaeda in large numbers, which I am not sure we have seen. They don’t have to do that, they just need to be able to keep them out of their communities.
Before we get too excited someone needs to check the half life of an Islamic Tribesman’s pledge.

Right now?! Where have they been for the past ___ years?
An Arab tribesman’s pledge is as good as the sand it’s written on. They shift sides to get with the winner. That’s why they’re jumping on our bandwagon now. They can read the tea leaves (or the goat’s entrails).
We should have done this from day 1. We should have showed them all that the USA is the biggest and baddest! That’s what they respect first and foremost.
Absolutely true. Lots of encouraging news every day. Its interesting how differently the enemy views the progress in the war vis a vis Harry Ried...

Duck-n-cover.
Most of the comment are mocking these tribes’ courage or the fact that it indicates the ‘winning side’ is now our side (which it is).
Please think otherwise of their courage. Killings of tribal leaders who turned on Al Qaeda are common place. Some of the killings are horrific acts of torture and mutilation. Would you stand up to AQ if it meant you, your family and everyone you knew could be killed because of it?
The fact that a tribal leader would get up and denounce Al Qaeda publicly is a very good sign.
The war effort would be much farther along if Saddam had been killed in his spider hole. One of the biggest fears Iraqi’s had was that Saddam would return to power. That fear kept many in the shadows, along with the fear that America would leave before the job was finished. Saddam’s execution and Bush’s resolve remain two of the most important but least appreciated elements of the turning tide in Iraq.
