Sushi, Diet Soda Latest Health Targets
NY Sun ^ | July 24, 2007 | BRADLEY HOPE

Two foods once thought healthy — sushi and diet soda — pose grave health threats, according to two studies released yesterday.

The city's Department of Health and Mental Hygiene is launching a campaign against sushi, encouraging women who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning to have children in the near future to stop eating raw fish and cut down on their intake of even cooked fish with high levels of mercury. The campaign was prompted by a citywide survey that showed that women of childbearing age in New York had three times the level of mercury in their blood stream as did women in the same age group nationwide.

Meanwhile, a study published online in Circulation, the journal of the American Heart Association, by nine researchers affiliated with Harvard, Tufts, Boston University, and the federal government's National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute from a center at Boston University found that people who drank one or more soft drinks a day, including diet soda, were 48% more likely to have conditions that lead to heart disease. The thousands of participants of the study had a 31% increased likelihood of becoming obese, a 25% increased risk of high blood sugar, and a higher risk for low levels of "good" cholesterol, according to an article in the Los Angeles Times.

The soda industry and the seafood industry lashed out at the studies.

"This study doesn't prove any link between soft drinks and increased risk of heart disease. Its assertions defy the existing body of scientific evidence, as well as common sense," the president of the American Beverage Association, Susan Neely, said of the soda study. "It is scientifically implausible to suggest that diet soft drinks — a beverage that is 99 percent water — cause weight gain or elevated blood pressure."

"It is extremely..."

No, sashimi is raw fish.

Sushi actually refers to the seasoned rice and may or may not contain fish, raw or otherwise.

Just sayin’ cuz I loves it.

” A great rule of thumb, as least for me, is moderation. You can have almost anything and it won’t hurt you if you use it in moderation.”

Especially if you wash it down with a glass of decent wine.

Never understood why some folks would want to eat fish bait.

Yum!

You just never know, and all it takes is one little hunk of bad meat to get sick enough to die, or have an ichy anus, or worse, a hungry 20 foot tape worm. (it will keep you thin though)

Same thing happens with all foods, not just sushi.

The only sure protection against all germs, all pathogens, all bacteria is to live like Howard Hughes.

Did anyone ever think either of the two were healthy?

Diet soda is full of nasty chemicals. Artificial sweetener is not good for anyone.

And raw fish? Hello?

Diet soda is AWFUL....all those chemicals. Drink iced tea...brewed from teabags, or plain old ice water......much better than the diet sodas. Bat dung.........it’s all it is.

California roll recipe:

* 4 cups sushi rice
* 4 sheets of nori (dried seaweed)
* 1 avocado
* 3/4 cup crab meat
* 2 tbsp mayonnaise
* 1/2 tsp salt

PREPARATION:
Peel an avocado and cut it into strips or mash it. Put imitation crab in a bowl and mix with salt and mayonnaise. Cover a bamboo mat with plastic wrap. Put a sheet of dried seaweed on top of the mat. Spread sushi rice on top of the seaweed and press firmly. Sprinkle sesame seeds over the sushi rice. Turn the sushi layer over so that the seaweed is on top. Place avocado and crab lengthwise on the seaweed. Roll the bamboo mat forward, pressing the ingredients inside the cylinder-shaped sushi. Press firmly the bamboo mat with hands, then remove the rolled sushi. Cut the sushi roll into bite-size pieces.

Makes 4 rolls

(It’s often made with fake crab)

I would rather have food than no food.

www.answers.com is wrong.
Sashimi is raw fish. Sashimi zushi is sushi with raw fish on top.
There are all varieties of sushi. You can even have sushi that is not formed into balls of rice. One of my favorite forms of sushi growing up (in Japan) was chirashi zushi which is the vinegar rice, mixed with various veggies, etc and sprinkled on top with nori (sea weed). Yum!

Well, duh.

95% of the people who drink diet drinks are fat!

You know you might be on to something. I love my Diet Coke. I do not drink coffee. So I need cafeine. I do not need to lose weight but I am trying to tone a little more. Do you think that drinking diet soda hurts my progress. Just curious. I know everyone is different.

If pregnant women eating fish is bad, how come the Japanese can get away with it?

Can’t wait until Mike Bloomberg moves to ban diet soda and sushi. Can health food be far behind?

I resemble that remark.

I've been trying to switch to Splenda diet soft drinks, which is not easy, because the only thing left on the market around here is Diet Rite, which I like just fine, but I miss Diet Wild Cherry Pepsi and some other things. I've read that aspertame metabolizes as formaldehyde in the body, which can't be good.

I don’t think it’s helpful. I’ve been substituting it with Iced Tea and Crystal Light, both low or no sodium, no calorie drinks, and have definately lost weight.

An abomination? I think it has mayo and avocado and fake crab in it. Sort of sushi for the western palate. Wait, then there is the cream cheese roll. I have family members who retch at it. Old School folks.

I never ate sashimi when I was pregnant, but never gave up sushi. That would be like giving up sandwiches, it doesn’t make sense.
